Wednesday dawned, and I awoke with a ray of hope. I happened to wake up early and got ready for school, having only bread and tea for breakfast.
When I arrived at school, I met my friends Amanda and Michael already in class. Apart from them, a few other classmates were also present. I considered sharing my concerns with them but decided it wasn't the right time. I thought the second break would be more appropriate. Given the possibility of Tutor Beatrice summoning me to her office, I didn't even consider the first break an option.
We had our usual friendly chat before the assembly bell rang. Fortunately, Tutor Beatrice and Tutor John didn't pay much attention to me during the assembly. I was preoccupied with wondering how Michael and Amanda would react to what I planned to share with them later.
During the assembly, I pondered whether they would believe me or not. After the assembly, we had math class with Tutor John, but to my surprise, he didn't pay much attention to me either. This led me to conclude that they might have already seen me as a problem they could easily eliminate.
The thought of their plan to harm me was unsettling, and I couldn't help but wonder who would be my savior.
Could my friends be my helping aid in surviving what lay ahead?
When the math class ended, our English teacher, Mr. Adisa, took over. His class was enjoyable, but I no longer trusted any teachers in the school, thinking some might be pretentious or even witches and wizards.
As the first break approached, I expected a student to come and summon me to Tutor Beatrice's office, but no one came. My friends were surprised, but I wasn't, given what I already knew.
"Paul, it seems there's no friendly chat with Tutor Beatrice today; finally, you're going to join us for our first break. It's been a while!" Michael said, smiling.
"Hurray! You're going to hang with us now," Amanda exclaimed, displaying a quick dance.
I wondered how much they must have missed my presence during our first breaks.
Before Michael could say something again, I cut him short without thinking. It was as if my mouth moved on its own.
"Michael and Amanda, I have something very serious to tell you guys, but let's go to our usual spot first," I said.
I was shocked at myself for uttering those words without thinking them through. A doubt was ringing in my head, wondering if it was the right time to tell them. But considering my life was in serious danger, I figured there was no waiting for what feels like the right time.
I could see the serious look on Michael and Amanda's faces, and I knew they were worried.
"Let's just go. I know you guys are already worried, but you both need to hear what I have to say." I said.
"Okay!" Amanda and Michael said in unison, and we went to our usual spot in the courtyard.
Seated on a bench, I started talking.
"I know what I'm about to say is kind of absurd, but I'm pleading with you guys to believe me." I paused, looking at both of them in the eyes, waiting for their approval to continue. They nodded, and I went on.
"Tutor Beatrice and Tutor John want to kill me. They have already planned it, and I know because I eavesdropped on their conversation." I said, dropping the bombshell.
My gaze was on Amanda and Michael, and I could see they were utterly shocked. They stared at me with eyes and mouths agape, unable to fathom what I said. Before they could recover, I continued.
"Guys, I know what I said is very extreme, but try to believe me. Let me tell you more about it. The unbelievable and bitter truth is that Tutor Beatrice is a witch, and Tutor John is her accomplice. The Zobo drink she gave me that day was meant to enable her to control me if I had taken a large sip of it." I paused for a few seconds before continuing.
