Chapter 17: Precaution

*Ron POV*

Carley and I sit with Clem. We sort of became a little family.

Ron: You wanna talk, sweetheart?

Clementine: Uh-uh.

Ron: You understand what happened, right?

Clementine: Yes.

Carley: What are you thinking about?

Clementine: What Chuck said.

Ron: What'd Chuck say?

Clementine: That what happened to Duck, will happen to me.

I got angry.

Ron: The fuck he did.

Clementine: Swear.

Ron: Sorry. I'm gonna talk some sense into him.

Clementine: Don't be mad.

Carley: I'll go with you.

Carley and I go to the front of the train to talk to Chuck.

Ron: Hey.

Chuck: How you doing?

Ron: Say it to me, asshole. What you said to my girl.

Chuck: Excuse me son?

Carley: Telling a little girl she's going to die. You wanna scare someone, scare us, motherfucker.

Chuck: Okie Dokie. She's gonna die.

Carley: Son of a bitch.

Chuck: How's that?

Ron: How about I throw your ass off this fucking train?

Chuck: Now we're both scared. Look, I'll explain myself, as long as you don't toss me off the rail. I know you guys don't have a plan. We get to Savannah, then what?

Carley: We do what's best for Clementine.

Chuck: Oh, you do have it all figured out. Nevermind. Look, sit with the girl and hash it out. Find a map. Teach her to use a weapon and cut her hair.

Ron: I'm not a barber.

Chuck: It ain't gotta be STYLED, Jesus.

Ron: Okay. I hear you. A plan, a haircut, and a gun. It's good advice.

We went back to talk to Clem.

Clementine: Did you talk to him?

Ron: Yeah. He explained himself and made some good points. Look, we won't let anything happen to you. But we need to take some precautions.

Clementine: Okay, yeah. That makes sense.

Carley: Don't worry sweetie.

Ron: We're going to form a plan when we reach Savannah, teach you to protect yourself, and tidy you up so you can't get grabbed.

Clementine: I'd like that.

Ron: Good.

Carley: Here take my glock.

Ron:Thanks

Ron: *kneeling down to Clementine's level* Alright, Clem. It's time we learned how to use this properly. It's important that you know how to protect yourself.

*Clementine: * nervously* Do I really have to? What if I hurt someone?

Ron: *gently* I know it's scary, but this is about keeping you safe. We're gonna take it slow, okay? I'll be right here with you.

*Carley*: *with a warm smile* You've got this, Clem. Just listen to Ron and take your time.

*I hand the gun to Clementine, showing her how to hold it properly. I adjust her grip slightly, making sure she feels comfortable.*

*Ron*: *calmly* First, we need to get your stance right. Feet apart, like this. *I show her how to position her feet* Now, keep your arms steady, and don't forget to breathe. That's the most important part.

*Clementine*: *mimicking his stance* Okay... like this?

Ron: *nodding approvingly* That's perfect. Now, I want you to focus on your target. Imagine there's a walker right in front of you. Aim for the head, just like we talked about.

*Clementine takes a deep breath, trying to steady her hands as she aims the gun at an empty soda can that I set up on the far side of the car. Carley watches closely, offering her encouragement.*

Carley: *cheerfully* You're doing great, Clem. Just keep your eyes on the target. You're stronger than you think.

Ron: *softly* Whenever you're ready, Clem. Just squeeze the trigger gently. Don't rush it.

*Clementine hesitates for a moment, then takes a deep breath and squeezes the trigger. The gun fires, and the bullet hits the can, though it's a little off-center. Clementine flinches slightly at the recoil but quickly recovers.*

Clementine: *wide-eyed* Did I get it?

Ron: *smiling proudly* You sure did. That was a great shot for your first try.

Carley: *clapping her hands lightly* Nice one, Clem! You're a natural.

*Clementine beams with pride, the fear she had earlier starting to melt away. Ron places a reassuring hand on her shoulder.*

Ron: Let's try it again. This time, focus on what you did right. You'll keep getting better, I promise.

Clementine: * nodding eagerly* Okay, I'll try again.

*Clementine resets her stance, this time with more confidence. She takes aim again, and after a moment, fires another shot. This one hits the can squarely in the middle, knocking it off its perch. Ron and Carley exchange proud looks as Clementine lowers the gun, smiling brightly.*

Carley: *excitedly* That was perfect, Clem! You're really getting the hang of this.

Ron: *grinning* I knew you could do it. Keep practicing, and soon enough, you'll be a pro.

Clementine: *smiling shyly* Thanks, Ron. Thanks, Carley.

Ron: *standing up and ruffling her hair playfully* You did all the work. Just remember, this is to protect yourself, okay? Only use it when you really need to.

Clementine: *serious but determined]* I will. I promise.

*I  nod, satisfied with the progress they've made. Carley walks over and gives Clementine an encouraging pat on the back. *

Carley: You're doing amazing, Clem. We're all proud of you.

*Clementine smiles again, feeling a little stronger, a little braver. The train continues to rumble along the tracks as the group moves forward, facing whatever challenges come their way together.*
