In the spring of 1493, the small village of Monteverde celebrated the birth of Isabella. Her mother, Marta, with her warm, chestnut-coloured skin and bright eyes, held her newborn daughter proudly. The whole village celebrated with food and dancing, believing Isabella was born under a lucky star and would bring happiness to her family.

As she grew, Isabella was surrounded by the simple beauty of Monteverde. Her home was filled with the smell of wildflowers and freshly baked bread. Her siblings—Giulia, Vittoria, and Luca—filled the house with laughter. Marta and her husband, Alessandro, loved their children deeply.

One sunny afternoon, Giulia ran up to Isabella, her eyes full of excitement. "Isa, look what I found!" she exclaimed, holding out a bright wildflower.

Isabella took the flower and smiled. "It's beautiful, Giulia. Thank you."

"Do you think we can make a crown with more flowers?" Giulia asked eagerly.

"Of course! Let's go find some more," Isabella replied, grabbing her sister's hand.

Together, they ran through the village, laughing as they picked flowers of all colors. They sat under a large oak tree, weaving the flowers into crowns and talking about far-off places.

"I want to travel the world one day," Isabella said dreamily.

"Will you take me with you?" Giulia asked, her eyes wide.

"Always," Isabella promised, placing the flower crown on her sister's head.

One evening, Luca went to his father's workshop, full of curiosity. "Papa, will you teach me woodworking?"

Alessandro smiled proudly. "One day, my son. But first, you must learn patience. Woodworking needs a steady hand."

"I'll try my best, Papa," Luca said seriously.

"That's all I ask," Alessandro said, ruffling Luca's hair. "Now go help your sisters with dinner."

Their days were filled with love and simple joys. But everything changed when Isabella was thirteen.

One afternoon, Alessandro worked hard in his workshop. He had been carving a special cabinet for a wealthy man in Florence. He was tired after many long days of work. As he reached for a piece of wood, his foot caught on a loose beam, and he stumbled.

In the confusion, his hand brushed against the sharp saw. He cried out in pain as the blade cut deep into his hand. Alessandro tried to steady himself, but his foot slipped again. He fell hard against the workbench, and a heavy cabinet fell on him, hitting his head.

The workshop went quiet.

Alessandro lay on the floor, breathing weakly. Blood dripped from his hand, mixing with the sawdust. He tried to call out, but no words came. His vision blurred, and in the fading light of the workshop, Alessandro took his last breath.

Later that evening, when Alessandro didn't come home for dinner, Marta became worried. She sent Luca to find him. When Luca entered the workshop and saw his father lying still on the floor, he froze.

"Papa?" Luca's voice trembled. There was no answer. Tears filled his eyes as he ran back home.

"Mama! Mama!" Luca cried, bursting through the door. Marta's face went pale.

Together, they rushed back to the workshop, but it was too late. Alessandro was gone. The village quickly gathered to help and comfort the family. Word spread through Monteverde of the accident, and the once-happy home became quiet and full of sorrow.

Isabella, just thirteen, stood in the workshop the next day, staring at the unfinished cabinet and the dried blood on the floor. She could still feel her father's presence, his strong hands guiding her as he taught her how to carve wood. But now, the room was silent.

One night, as Isabella lay in bed, her heart heavy with sadness, she whispered, "Mama, why did this happen?"

Marta hugged her tightly, tears falling. "Life can be very hard sometimes, my dear. But we must be strong. Your father's spirit is still with us."

"I miss him so much," Isabella said, her voice shaking.

"I miss him too, my love," Marta replied softly. "But we'll get through this together. We have to be brave, for him."

The village helped the family with quiet sympathy, but the emptiness Alessandro left behind was great. One day, as Isabella stood by her father's grave, she felt a new strength growing inside her.

"I promise I'll make you proud, Papa," she whispered. "I'll take every opportunity and find my path, just like you taught me."

Her chestnut skin, glowing under the Roman sun, reflected her strength and beauty, showing the pride of her African heritage. With a deep breath, Isabella turned away from the grave, ready to face the future with courage.
