Isabella walked back to Monteverde, feeling defeated. The little money she had saved in Rome jingled in her pocket, but it wasn't enough. As she got closer to her family's home, she saw her mother, Marta, looking worried through the window. When Isabella opened the door, Marta rushed to her.
"Isa, why are you back so soon?" Marta asked, her voice full of concern. "What happened?"
Isabella dropped her bags and hugged her mother, tears falling. "Mama, I was fired," she whispered. "Signor Conti... he wanted me to do something terrible. When I said no, he fired me."
Marta's face went pale. "Oh, Isa," she said, holding her tightly. "We will figure something out. We have to."
Days went by, and things in Monteverde got worse. Isabella tried to help around the house, but she was always worried about Luca and Giulia, who were very sick. One cold morning, the worst happened. Giulia's laboured breathing stopped, and Luca was silent.
"Giulia? Luca?" Isabella called, running to their beds. But it was too late. Both children lay still, their faces peaceful.
"No! No!" Marta screamed, collapsing beside them. "My babies, my sweet babies!"
Isabella's heart broke as she held her mother. They both cried uncontrollably, overwhelmed by grief.
"I can't do this anymore," Marta sobbed one night. "First Alessandro, and now my babies. I don't want to live, Isa. I can't."
Isabella's eyes filled with fear. "Mama, you have to stay. You have to be strong for me and Vittoria. We need you."
Marta looked at her remaining children, her pain mixed with a small bit of resolve. "You're right, Isa. I have to keep going for you and Vittoria."
Weeks passed, and the small family tried to find a new routine. Then, one afternoon, a letter arrived for Isabella. She recognised Maria's handwriting and opened it with shaking hands.
"Isabella,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have wonderful news. I've found a job for you in Florence, working as a maid for the Castellini family—the most powerful family in all of Italy. They are kind and generous. This could be your chance to make a better life for yourself and your family.
With love,
Maria"Isabella felt hope for the first time in weeks. She rushed to her mother, holding the letter.
"Mama, look!" she exclaimed. "Maria found me a job in Florence, working for the Castellini family. This could change everything for us."
Marta read the letter, her eyes filling with hope. "Isa, this is a blessing. You must go. This could be the chance we've been praying for."
Isabella nodded, determination in her eyes. "I'll go, Mama. I'll make sure we survive."
As Isabella prepared for her journey to Florence, a sense of hope mixed with her grief. She would leave Monteverde behind, but the love for her family would drive her forward.
