Isabella's anxiety over her siblings consumed her. Each letter from Monteverde detailed Luca and Giulia's worsening health, and the burden weighed heavily on her young shoulders. Desperate for more money to buy them medicine, she decided to ask for a raise.

One evening, after a gruelling day at work, Isabella nervously approached Signor Conti in his small, cluttered office. Known for his greed and harsh demeanour, he was hardly the man anyone would turn to for help.

"Signor Conti," Isabella began, her voice trembling, "I need to ask you something important."

He grunted, not looking up from his ledger. "What is it, girl?"

"I need a raise," she said, her heart racing. "My siblings are very ill, and I need money to buy them medicine. Please, sir, I beg you."

Signor Conti finally looked up, his gaze cold and calculating. "A raise? You think money grows on trees? You should be grateful for the pittance you earn."

"Please," Isabella pleaded, tears welling in her eyes. "I'll work harder, longer hours. Just please, help me."

He leaned back in his chair, a sinister smile spreading across his face. "There might be a way," he said slowly, his eyes raking over her. "If you're willing to... earn it."

Isabella's stomach churned. "What do you mean?"

He stood up and walked around the desk to stand uncomfortably close to her. "Spend the night with me, and I'll give you the money you need."

Horrified, Isabella stepped back. "No, I can't. That's... that's wrong."

Signor Conti's face twisted with anger. "Then get out. If you're not willing to do what's necessary, you can forget about any extra money. In fact, you can forget about this job."

Isabella's eyes widened in fear. "No, please, don't fire me. I need this job."

"Then make a choice," he snapped. "Take the offer or leave."

Tears streamed down Isabella's face as she backed away. "I can't," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I won't."

"Then you're fired," he said coldly. "Get your things and leave by tomorrow."

Isabella fled the office, her heart pounding and her vision blurred by tears. She stumbled into the laundry room, collapsing onto a pile of linens as her sobs echoed in the empty space.

Maria and Luisa found her there, their faces etched with concern. "Isabella, what happened?" Maria asked, kneeling beside her.

"He... he wanted me to..." Isabella struggled to speak, the words choking her. "He fired me because I wouldn't."

Luisa embraced Isabella, her own eyes glistening with tears. "That monster. We'll figure something out, Isa. You're not alone."

"But what will I do?" Isabella cried. "My siblings are dying, and I can't help them."

Maria's eyes flashed with anger as she clenched her fists. "We'll find a way, Isabella. Somehow, we'll get through this."

As Isabella lay awake that night, her tears soaking into her pillow, she felt her life spiralling out of control. But amidst her despair, a spark of defiance began to kindle within her. She refused to let Signor Conti's cruelty break her. She would find a way to save her family, no matter what it took.

In the quiet darkness of Rome, Isabella made a silent vow. Her journey was far from over, and she would confront whatever challenges lay ahead with the same resolve that had brought her this far.
