Dinner was... eventful. For starters we ended up going to a buffet per my request and the food was oddly good. It almost distracted me from the topic at hand. Almost. We loaded up our plates and sat down. I asked Gon to start from when we lost contact and so he did.
"Well, after a while of just traveling with Ging he started talking about going on a new expedition. He said he wanted to go to a place very far away. It was called the dark continent. Though, we couldn't just go right away, I had to train for a long time before we could even consider going." Gon played with the food on his plate while he talked and glanced between me and Killua. Also what the hell is a dark continent and why hadn't I ever heard of it?
"Ok so then why'd you stop texting?" I asked and leaned back. He gave a guilty smile. "My dad broke my phone. He didn't do it on purpose but we didn't buy a new one because it would distract me from my training. I'm glad we didn't because I might not have been able to get my nen back with it!"Gon cheered towards the end of the sentence.
For some reason I felt a pang in my chest. Gon had nen back? It honestly made me a little bit scared. I saw what he could do when we were 14 god knows what he could do now, especially if he learned from Ging this time.
"Wait a sec, so you can use nen now but how?" Killua asked with a mouth full of noodles I handed him a napkin silently and he wiped his face.
"Lots and lots of meditation. Actually, I didn't even know I had it back for a while. You see, Ging had something he wanted to take care of for a while and instructed me to go back to whale island until he was done. When he came back he told me to use gyo and there it was! I'm sad to say I'm probably only about as strong as I was when we were 14 but it's a work in progress." He trailed off.
"Yeah we saw how strong you were when you were 14." I mumbled under my breath and Killua elbowed me in the ribs. I saw Gon's expression drop a bit.
"So Gon, how'd you end up an examiner?" Killua quickly tried to change the subject. I huffed and kept eating.
Gon's eyes lit back up and he smiled. "I got a letter inviting me. Though, it was because Ging referred me."
I hummed. Maybe it wasn't so coincidental that the three of us ended up meeting up at the hunters exam again. It almost gives me Deja vu. Suddenly my phone started ringing. It was Alluka's ringtone, Material Girl.
I laughed to myself and Killua perked up at the familiar sound. I answered quickly and stood up to go talk somewhere quieter. Killua looked at me with a slightly worried look but I heard Alluka's joyous squeal and knew it was fine. I kissed his forehead and walked to the woman's restroom.
"Alluka! What's up?" I asked and she squealed again.
"Big sister guess what? Bisky is letting me take the hunters exam this year!" Alluka yelled happily into the speaker. The way she called me big sister made me smile. She'd started doing it not long before she left to be on her own.
"Oh that's great! You do know that it's tomorrow right?" I asked and she hummed.
"Don't worry, I'm already working on it. I just wanted to tell you since you'd be there. Don't tell Big brother though, I want to surprise him! Plus if I don't make it to your guys' phase then I won't disappoint him." Alluka trailed off and I sighed.
"Alluka, your brother would never be disappointed with you, worried yes, disappointed no. Besides you'll totally make it. Most people there won't know nen like you do." I reassured her. I could practically hear her smile growing.
"Oh! Sorry I have to go Bisky wants to get food before I leave. I'll see you soon! Tell big brother I said hi!" She stumbled over her words and hung up quickly. I laughed to myself and pushed myself off of the sink.
I looked at myself in the mirror for about a minute or so for no reason and then made my way back to the boys. That felt weird to say. It hadn't been the boys for a good five years.
As I approached our table I saw the two of them laughing with each other and acting like hooligans. I could practically see their twelve year old counterparts in their place. It brought a smile to my face.
When Killua spotted me and stopped eating and just watched me walk back while Gon kept talking. I sat down and gave him a confused look.
"What's with the staring?" I asked and he went a bright pink. "I just wanted to stare at you." He mumbled and I rolled my eyes.
"You guys are still gross." Gon huffs and we both glare at him.
"Yeah and you're still single." I clap back.
Killua lets out a loud laugh that catches on soon. After our laughter dies down Gon asks about Alluka.
"She's just fine. I just got off the phone with her and she was just telling me how she was super excited to go out to eat with Bisky tonight." I know lying is bad but in my defense I only left out parts of the truth.
Killua nods and thanks me for telling him about the phone call and starts another random conversation with Gon.
Our dinner was definitely eventful. Lots of yelling and laughter. Gon even started a food fight with us. All in all, it was good to have him back. But in the back of my mind I can't help but be weary of him. He's my friend and he was a confused child but that doesn't excuse what he did. A part of me is still waiting for an apology too. It might have to wait until til after the exam though, considering we're on an airship getting ready to begin it.
