Alexander had left a few moments ago, Sam leaving shortly after him for a run. As I pulled the covers across the bed, the girl’s laughs bubbled up from downstairs, warming every empty room and banishing the shadows from the corners of my eye. It was so wonderful having them here, and it was already a sad prospect that they would have to eventually leave us.

I pulled a brush through my thick curls, buttoned up a green checked shirt and slipped on some jeans. The dark colours were a contrast against my pale skin, lit up by the bright morning light streaming in through the window. A group of children ran past outside, heavy school bags slung across their shoulders and mothers following closely behind.

Some of those exact mothers weren’t really my biggest fans. They were still sore over Sole’s betrayal and didn’t think someone my age should have taken over as Alpha female so soon, especially since they were fond of Leila. To my surprise, pretty much everyone had wanted me to take this position beside Alex. But there were still some of the older shifters who thought that my Omega past was wrong, and even a few that believed we had been wrong about Sole.

Despite the flicker of annoyance and sadness, a small smile curved upon my lips as I saw two wolves play fighting in the shade of the trees. They bit and pawed, shifting repeatedly. Nothing made me happier than to see the pack getting back to normal after the trouble we had been through. The scars are still there, but they’re fading.

With a happy sigh, I began to turn away from the window, but something caught my eye. I looked back out and saw a flash of tousled blonde hair disappearing into the porch below. My smile became a grin as I instantly recgonised Rose’s lithe form. She was coming over to meet everyone.

The doorbell rung as I quickly slipped downstairs. My bare feet slapped against the wooden floorboards, making Camille’s head flicker up from where she sat on the sofa, Sally plaiting her hair. “Who’s that?” she asked sweetly, handing her mum a flowery hair band.

“This,” I smiled, drawing open the door, “is Rose-Marie Martins. My best friend and wonderful Beta.” Rose’s eyes flickered up with surprise to meet mine. Her cheeks warmed with colour as she curtsied, holding out the corners of her delicate lace blouse.

When I had first met her, Rose would’ve shied away and kept herself from the attention of strangers. She was still the Rose I loved, but being a ‘were jaguar’ in Beta position had made her work fiercely hard to prove herself, and being without a pair had made her focused and strong. Yet, even without a mate, she was perfect for the position. The pack was the most important thing to her.

“Well, that was a lovely welcome,” she smiled, as I pulled her into a warm hug, “Alex here?”

“Nope. He’s out with the elders having a look around the school and at how Rae is doing. Remember?”

“Oh, yes. As hard working as ever. Sullivan only needed him,” she nodded, “I think Rae’s doing a great job. She’s a breath of fresh air compared to some of the old teachers.”
