At twenty-two, I had left behind the high school volleyball court for a different kind of field—fashion. Working as an assistant to the famous designer Asahi Azumane was a dream come true, though it came with its own set of challenges. Today was no exception. We had been tasked with measuring the Japanese volleyball team for their new uniforms, as the Olympics loomed just around the corner. It was a big deal, and I was determined to make a good impression.
The venue was a bustling sports facility, filled with the hum of activity and the occasional burst of laughter from the athletes. I had my measuring tape and clipboard ready, trying to focus on the task at hand. The players were a mix of excitement and nerves, and I couldn't help but admire their athleticism. It brought back memories of my own days on the court, even if I wasn't the star I once dreamed of being.
I had just finished measuring one of the players when I noticed a shift in the room's energy. It was as if the air itself had become charged. My eyes followed the source of this sudden shift, and there, emerging from the crowd, was a figure who commanded attention with a mere presence. It was Kageyama Tobio—the setter for the Olympic team.
I had heard of him before, of course. Who hadn't? His reputation as one of the top players was well-known, but seeing him in person was an entirely different experience. Tobio was tall, imposing, and carried himself with a confidence that was both intimidating and magnetic. His features were sharp and focused, his eyes scanning the room with an intensity that seemed to cut through the noise.
As he approached, I felt an unexpected flutter of nervousness. It was strange—after all, I was just here to do a job. But there was something about him, something that made it impossible to ignore him. His presence filled the space, drawing my attention despite my best efforts to stay professional.
When it was his turn for measurements, I could hardly contain my curiosity. Asahi's instructions were clear: get accurate measurements and make sure everything was perfect. But as I approached him, I found it difficult to keep my focus entirely on the task. Kageyama Tobio was unlike anyone I had ever met. His aura was so strong, so compelling, that it was hard not to be drawn into his orbit.
"Mr. Kageyama," I began, trying to keep my voice steady, "if you could stand still for a moment, I'll just take your measurements."
He nodded, his gaze meeting mine briefly before he focused on a spot on the wall. There was a sense of calm determination about him, a quiet intensity that contrasted with the more relaxed demeanor of the other players. I found myself drawn to that focus, to the way he seemed to exude both power and restraint.
As I worked, I couldn't help but steal glances at him. I'd never been this close to someone so famous, and the sensation was oddly exhilarating. He was concentrated, almost detached, and yet there was something vulnerable about the way he stood there, waiting.
I finished up and handed him the measurement sheet. "Thank you, Mr. Kageyama. That's all for now."
He took the sheet, his fingers brushing mine for a brief moment. The contact was fleeting, but it sent a shiver down my spine. I looked up to see him studying me, his eyes softer than they had been before.
"You're the new assistant, right?" he asked, his voice low and smooth. "I've heard good things about you."
I was taken aback. "Uh, yes. That's me. I'm Shoyo Hinata. It's an honor to meet you."
A faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "The honor's mine. Good luck with your work."
He turned and walked away, leaving me standing there with a mix of awe and bewilderment. I couldn't shake the feeling that this was more than just a brief encounter. There was a connection, however fleeting, that felt significant.
As the day wore on, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on my tasks. My thoughts kept drifting back to Kageyama Tobio and the way he had looked at me. There was something about him that resonated deeply, something I couldn't quite put my finger on.
All I knew was that, for the first time in a long time, I felt a spark of something new and unexpected. The connection I had felt with the court years ago seemed to flicker back to life, and I couldn't help but wonder what it might mean for the future.
For now, though, I had a job to do and a growing sense that my path was about to take a new turn
