Yunjin chewed on her inner cheek, her focus doing everything to not be tuned in to Chaewon across the table from her. It wasn't really working. Yujin chewed on her inner cheek, doing anything but focusing on Chaewon sitting directly across from her.
Unnie. Had she really called her that, even after what... four? Five years since they had last seen each other? Yunjin couldn't explain the weird weight in her chest that was clenching just at the mere thought of talking with Chaewonagainst her own will. Not her fault Chaewon had been the stupid one and-
"Yunjin-ah..." Chaewon huffed while she slapped her hand against the rickety table between them. She leaned over the small space to look at her with a strong pout. "Are you even listening to me?"
No. Of course not. "I was..." Yunjin sighed, her eyes fluttering shut. She slowly groaned, lifting her body to try and sit straighter before both Chaewon and the ache in her shoulders could get too overwhelming. "What's the matter?"
"I'm trying to talk about this damn thing and you clearly aren't even listening to me." Chaewon's pout deepened, only making the scorned puppy look worse on her. Maybe in another lifetime it would have been adoring, but she was graced with all the bad luck in this world for it not to be this one. "Look... I'll go over it again."
Yunjin sighed carefully, the tightness in her shoulder blades pricking like a million little needles. Wouldn't be surprising if it was all of the past things she would have fucked over leading up to this, and karma was waiting for one whooping giant load to thrash back in her face. And then laugh.
Her thoughts weaved in-between Chaewon's voice, something something... 'We have to drop off our bags at the hotel first' and something... something 'get close to some guy.' Yunjin hadn't exactly bothered with the details of the case last night when she'd been busy going out. Not thinking about Chaewon. Or how much prettier she looked, with all the new freckles and tightness in her face, or her new hairstyle, or-
"...and so then once we figure it out, and who it is, we make a formal report, get back-up. Take down the person who is after him. And that's it!" Chaewon concluded with a tough grin, explicitly ignoring Yunjin's distant look.
Yunjin took a moment to breathe and let it all settle in her head before finding the words. "How did you get into this line of work?" She asked instead, lifting her head to lock eyes with Chaewon's own honey-brown pair.
Chaewon mouthed a silent string of words, stunned. "Well..." she cleared her throat with what tried to be a gentle cough. "You tell me first."
"Nuh-uh," Yunjin insisted. "Seriously. Tell me. I couldn't imagine you working as... a bodyguard otherwise." Which was true, Chaewon was so far gone with all the images she'd seen of bodyguards on the internet— batting off saesangs in a clean little suit seemed alien to her.
"Everything just- when I was growing up felt out of place," Chaewon groaned, rolling her eyes as if this wasn't precious information she was releasing. She leaned back with a wiggle, loosening her button up. "And I was directed to a company by someone I was close to... probably better to give it a shot since I hadn't done well in school. But I liked helping people, and I felt a little lost after graduation. Surprisingly, I managed to enjoy it."
Probably because I wasn't there. "That's really good." Yunjin barely managed not to seethe. It was hard not to break those emotions that she'd been dragging along for the last five years, despite it never being her fault in the first place. It was almost impossible to get over a girl's first heartbreak and now Yunjin was smacked back alongside her.
Chaewon's eyes finally flitted back to Yunjin, drinking in her image. "And how on Earth did you become a... what do you people call it? Private agent? Isn't that just fancy talk for hitman?"
