18| Adulting

After the bar he texted Diane. She was in her night suit and her hair were open she was almost sleepy. But she still came down for him. She was standing on the street rubbing her eyes. He was sitting on his bike.

Diane: "Something wrong?"

Archie: "Can you spend the night with me?"

Diane: "Wait I will dress up!" She readily said yes.

Archie: "No leave it. But will you come if I say you might fall in trouble too?"

She sat on the bike and hugged him. It was her answer right there. He started the bike. A lot of things were going on but right now all he wanted was to know about Diane's feelings.

Archie: " Why do you like me?"

Diane: " I like you thats it."

Archie: " But why? No one has liked me ever."

Diane: " Because they cannot see you but I can."

He stayed silent. There was a girl who could do anything for him and then there was Anna who could do anything to ruin him. He was more clear than ever that she can never love him. But what was he going to do with his feelings that still wanted her. What was he gonna do? Buried in his thoughts he walked behind Diane.

They booked a room. Diane locked the door and slowly moved towards him and unbuttoned his shirt. He was exhausted. Gently she held his face and kissed him. Then she sat on his lap and hugged him tightly. He spend rest of the night in her arms.

He has to decide a lot. He definitely could not fight her. She received a call. there was a whole list of things she wanted to bring in her college campus. He head out leaving a note for Diane who was sleeping soundly. He decided to leave the job and was now focusing on investing all the money from book into real estate for the rest of the time he would study for bar exams and write.

Then go to the bar. His charm was increasing. Slowly he became familiar with Diane and her family. She was also acquainted with the kid and grandparents. She was always there with him. Meanwhile Anna was calling him multiple times a day to do errands an advancement , to see her more times a day maybe. She was now something unachievable but his desire was undying.

There was a party he secretly took Diane away. He pinned her across the wall and kissed her passionately. He had a ring in his hand. Then he walked away. He sat on his knee.

Archie: "You are the first girl who ever loved me and I like you too but in my heart there is something unachievable. You have become a part of my life that I cannot live without. I do not want to lie but I am speaking my heart out. I have decided to be in the list of people who marry someone and love someone else. Who spend their life with someone and desire someone else. I will try to give you everything. I have things I can not tell you about, I have places I have to run towards, I have a kid too. Can you still accept me? Can you marry a guy this flawed? Can you still hold on to me?" He was more serious than ever.

Diane: "Yes!" She was cheerful. He put ring on her finger. She held his hand and took him inside. She was now showing off her ring to everybody. He could not move his eyes from her. It was somehow unbelievable for him.

It was the farewell night. Campus was filled with decorations. Cam, Anna, Lily were graduates now. It was a long party. For the most part of it Anna and Lily were together except the mini breaks when Lily was busy with arrangements and John and his desires and when Anna was busy with Cam in a dark room.

Party was finally over. Everyone was heading out with their hookups for tonight. She texted Lily but she was not responding. It was already midnight and John confirmed that she was not with him. Adding to it she was even drunk. She has now searched her everywhere finally she saw her. She was standing on the rooftop edge. She quickly ran after her.

Anna: "Lily come down. What are you doing?"

She slowly tried to approach her.

Lily: "I was waiting for you!"

Anna: "Come down. It's not a joke."

Lily: "Will you care if I die?" She giggled.

Anna: "I said come down." She shouted.

Lily: "Answer me!" She shouted and stomped her feet . For a moment she lost her balance and was about to fall that just made Anna skip a beat.

Anna: "I will now come down." She was standing at the edge. Any hasty action could cost her life. She had to be careful.

Lily: "What will you do tomorrow?"

Anna: "Sleep go to bar or what! Please come down!"

Lily: "No vacation to Paris?"

Anna: "I will take a vacation with you now come down." She was panicking.

Lily: "What about after that?"

Anna: "I do not know obviously it will be a head on between me and John for company."

Lily: "What about me?"

Anna: " What do you want? I will make that happen. But please come down!"

Lily: "Do you remember when you made a promise to me years ago?"

Anna: " I do not but you always say so but whatever it is I will fulfil it but come down." She was exhausted now.

Lily: " You had a party at home. Dad clearly instructed me to befriend you I was already clinging on you in school by then. But I was not feeling good I searched for you I was in the swimming pool area and I jumped. You jumped after me and saved me. I was crying Dad would kill me.

You took me to a hidden place so no one would find out. We sat on the ground. Everybody wanted me to be pitch perfect. I was not free. I could not make mess. I wanted to do whatever. I asked you to promise me to give me all that but you could not understand that maybe it was too deep for your little head.

Anyway they found us and they were shouting on us. You said that you jumped and I saved you. Dad was pleased that day. Next day in school I punched a girl to test you and you took the fall. You did not remember it but you fulfil it every time. I like to do stuff like this when I know you can protect me. You are my only friend and I love you a lot. I want you to make another promise."

Anna: "I promise just get down whatever it is I promise."

Lily: "I am 3 week pregnant. Dad asked me to do it now I am pregnant with John. It will get dirty from now on I do not know what will happen but I love this kid. I always wanted it. Promise me you will love it, protect it, give it a nice atmosphere, take care of it and never abuse it or compare it and make sure that he never gets broken or twisted or toxic like us. Promise me."

Anna: "This baby? John will not take it! He will ask you for abortion. Then your Dad will ask you to abort it too, what were you thinking?" She was concerned.

Lily: "That is your concern. Just promise me or I will jump!" She shouted.

It was a lot even for her. Anna: "Alright I promise."

Lily opened her arms. Anna gradually walk forward holding her waist. She pulled her down. She would have slapped her if she was not pregnant. It was going to be dirty successor race and now she has to protect these two too from them and from herself. Lily was now tightly hugging her. She was reeking of alcohol. Why was she even drunk when she was pregnant. Despite waking her up she was asleep. She took her up like a sack of potatoes. She vomited all her way.

She walked holding her through stairs. She was exhausted plus she was vomiting. She cleaned her face with tissue. In a way she was her only family, her only friend and only one she cared about. Handling her was a lot and now even this baby.
