The Royal Guard headquarters buzzed with activity as preparations began for the trap that Kristin, Marieke, and Sabrina were planning. The information from Cassandra had given them a potential way to deal with the shadow, but executing the plan would be risky.

Kristin, Marieke, and Sabrina were deep in discussion as they mapped out their strategy. They had chosen a secluded location on the edge of the forest—an area where the shadow’s presence had been most strongly felt. The plan was to use a powerful crystal as bait, hoping to lure the shadow into the open.

"We need to set up protective wards around the area," Sabrina said, her eyes focused on the map. "If the shadow is as dangerous as Cassandra says, we can’t afford to be caught off guard."

Marieke nodded, her brow furrowed in concentration. "And we’ll need to position ourselves carefully. If the shadow reveals itself, we need to be ready to strike quickly and decisively."

Kristin looked up from her notes, her expression serious. "I’ll take a small team to set up the trap. We’ll create a barrier that should contain the shadow long enough for us to attack. We need to be prepared for anything, though. The shadow might not come alone."

As the team prepared for the mission, the tension in the headquarters was palpable. The guards were briefed on their roles, and the area surrounding the trap site was fortified with magical wards and traps to prevent any surprises.

By dusk, the trap site was ready. The crystal, securely anchored in a protective casing, was placed in the center of the designated area. The wards were activated, casting a shimmering barrier around the crystal. The team took their positions, hidden among the trees and ready to spring into action.

As night fell, the air grew colder, and an eerie silence settled over the forest. The only sound was the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures. Kristin, Marieke, and Sabrina watched the crystal intently, waiting for any sign of the shadow.

Hours passed, and just as the team began to feel the strain of the long wait, a strange energy began to stir in the air. The ground trembled slightly, and a chilling breeze swept through the forest. The shadow had arrived.

From the darkness emerged a dark, shifting figure—its form indistinct, but its presence unmistakably malevolent. The shadow moved towards the crystal, its movements fluid and menacing. It seemed to be drawn to the crystal’s power, circling it with a predatory grace.

Kristin signaled to the team, and they sprang into action. The protective barrier flared with light, creating a shimmering wall that surrounded the shadow and the crystal. The shadow recoiled, its dark form writhing against the barrier as it tried to find a way out.

Sabrina stepped forward, her hands glowing with concentrated light magic. She began to chant an incantation, directing her magic towards the shadow. The light intensified, casting sharp beams through the barrier and striking the shadow directly.

The shadow shrieked, its form convulsing as it was hit by the light. It was clear that the trap was working, but the shadow was not going down easily. It lashed out at the barrier, its darkness trying to tear through the protective wards.

Marieke joined Sabrina, adding her own magic to the attack. Together, they focused their energy on the shadow, pushing it back and forcing it to retreat. Kristin and her team watched closely, ready to act if the shadow tried to escape or if any new threats emerged.

The battle raged on, the forest illuminated by flashes of light and the flickering shadow’s struggle. Despite their best efforts, the shadow managed to slip through a small gap in the barrier, vanishing into the darkness with a final, echoing shriek.

Breathing heavily, Kristin, Marieke, and Sabrina regrouped. The shadow had been weakened, but it was clear that their fight was far from over. The crystal remained safe, but the shadow’s escape was a sobering reminder of the power and cunning of their enemy.

"That was too close," Kristin said, her voice filled with exhaustion. "We need to be more prepared next time. The shadow is stronger than we anticipated, and it’s only a matter of time before it strikes again."

Sabrina nodded, her expression troubled. "We’ve managed to drive it off for now, but it will be back. We need to find out more about how to permanently defeat it. And we need to keep an eye out for any other threats that might be connected to this."

Marieke added, "We’ll need to strengthen our wards and continue our research. There’s still much we don’t know about the shadow and its weaknesses."

As the team began to pack up and head back to headquarters, they knew that the battle was far from over. The shadow had shown its strength, but they had also learned valuable information about its vulnerabilities. With renewed determination, they prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

The night was dark and full of unknowns, but Kristin, Marieke, and Sabrina were resolute. They would continue their fight against the darkness, no matter how long it took or how difficult it might be. The safety of their realm depended on their ability to uncover the truth and defeat the shadow once and for all
