Levi's POV

The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the field. The crisp air hinted that winter was just around the corner, even here in California. The grass beneath my cleats was still slick from the rain earlier in the day, and each breath I took was tinged with the coolness of the coming season. I stood near the fifty-yard line, football in hand, my gaze fixed on Alex as she jogged to her position. There was no denying it—she looked every bit the wide receiver: strong, fast, and fiercely determined.

But she was also infuriating.

My grip on the football tightened as I watched her. How did we end up here, just the two of us for extra training with Coach Brian? The answer was obvious. Our constant bickering was screwing up the team's rhythm, and as quarterback and wide receiver, that was a disaster waiting to happen. We needed to figure this out, and fast.

"Alright, you two," Coach Brian's voice broke through my thoughts, calm but with an edge of frustration. "Today's about timing. Levi, trust Alex to be where she needs to be. Alex, trust Levi to get the ball to you. No excuses, no pointing fingers—just focus on the play. Got it?"

Alex nodded, her expression set with determination. I just grunted in response, tossing the ball from hand to hand. Trust. That was the word everyone kept throwing around when it came to us. But trust wasn't the problem. It was something deeper, something we were both too stubborn to admit.

"Okay, slant route," Coach Brian called out. "Levi, quick release. Alex, hit that gap fast. No hesitation."

I took a deep breath and nodded, settling into position. My mind was running through the play, everything mechanical, calculated. I knew exactly what I needed to do—I just had to ignore the fact that it was Alex on the other end.

"Ready?" Coach called. "Set!"

I dropped back, my eyes locked on Alex as she shot off the line. She moved with the kind of fluidity that made her an asset on the field, weaving through invisible defenders like she was born for it. For a moment, everything clicked—the route was crisp, the timing perfect. I released the ball, watching it spiral through the air.

But then, in a split second, everything fell apart.

Alex hesitated, just the slightest pause, before reaching for the ball. It was barely noticeable, but I saw it. The hesitation threw off her timing, and she ended up stretching too far. The ball sailed just out of her reach, hitting the turf with a dull thud.

"Seriously?" I muttered, shaking my head as I stalked toward her. "You hesitated."

Alex spun around, eyes blazing. "I did not hesitate."

I stepped closer, frustration bubbling over. "You did. You were off by half a second, and that's all it takes to mess up a play like this."

She crossed her arms over her chest, her jaw tightening. "Oh, so it's my fault now? Maybe if you threw the ball where it was supposed to go, we wouldn't have this problem."

My fists clenched, trying to keep my voice level. "I threw it exactly where it needed to be. You weren't in position."

"Oh, please," she snapped, taking a step closer. "You act like you're the only one who knows how to play this game."

"I wouldn't have to if you could just—"

"Enough!" Coach Brian's voice cut through the rising tension. He stepped between us, holding up his hands. "You two are supposed to be working together, not tearing each other apart. You're both at fault here. Levi, your pass was slightly off. Alex, you did hesitate. It's not about who's right or wrong—it's about fixing it."
