Jackson POV
I hadn't expected the day to turn out the way it had. The beach had been fun, but the ride back and now this diner stop had thrown me for a loop. I'd agreed to this fake relationship with Josy, thinking it would be a simple, mutually beneficial arrangement. But now, as I sat beside her in the diner, her laughter ringing in my ears, I couldn't ignore the fact that something had shifted.
Every time she smiled at me, every time her hand brushed mine, it felt like a jolt of electricity. And it wasn't just physical attraction—it was deeper than that. I was starting to care about her in a way that went beyond the fake couple act we'd agreed to. I found myself wanting to know more about her—her likes, her dislikes, her past. I wanted to make her smile, to be the person she turned to when things got tough.
But that scared me.
I hadn't planned on catching feelings, and I wasn't sure how to navigate them now that we were here. Was she feeling the same way? Or was this all just part of the game for her?
The sound of her laughter brought me back to the moment, and I turned to look at her, a soft smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. She was beautiful—radiant, even—and it wasn't just her looks. It was the way she carried herself, the way she interacted with people, the way she made me feel like I was the only person in the room when she looked at me.
"Alright, your turn, Jackson," Alex said, pulling me out of my thoughts. "What's something embarrassing about you?"
I chuckled, scratching the back of my neck as I thought for a moment. "Alright, I'll play. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with becoming a magician. I practiced card tricks for hours in my room, convinced that I was going to be the next David Blaine or something. I even performed a 'magic show' for my family, but I was so nervous that I ended up dropping all the cards and tripping over my own feet. It was a disaster."
The table burst into laughter, and I couldn't help but laugh along with them, the memory now just a funny story I could tell. I glanced over at Josy, who was grinning at me, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"You? A magician?" she teased, nudging me playfully with her shoulder. "I'd pay good money to see that."
I grinned back at her, feeling that familiar warmth spread through my chest. "Well, maybe I'll dust off the old deck of cards and show you a trick or two."
Josy laughed, shaking her head. "I'm holding you to that."
As the conversation continued, I found myself leaning into the moment, enjoying the easy camaraderie between the four of us. I hadn't expected to feel so connected to this group of people, but somehow, over the course of the day, we had all bonded in a way that felt... different. Deeper.
And then there was Josy.
She was different, too. There was something about her that drew me in, something that made me want to be better—not just for the sake of our fake relationship, but for her. I wanted to be the kind of guy who deserved her, who could make her happy.
But as much as I wanted to believe that what we had was real, there was still that nagging doubt in the back of my mind. What if this was all just for show? What if Josy didn't feel the same way I did?
I sighed quietly, my eyes flicking to Josy as she laughed at something Alex said. The sound was music to my ears, but it also stirred up my anxiety. I couldn't deny that I was falling for her, but I also couldn't shake the fear that I was setting myself up for heartbreak.
Josy caught my eye and smiled, her gaze warm and inviting. I wanted to lean in, to bridge the gap between us, to show her how much she meant to me. But I hesitated, unsure if she felt the same way or if I was simply reading too much into our moments together.
For now, though, I resolved to take things one step at a time. I would keep being the guy who made her laugh, who stood by her side, who supported her in whatever way she needed. Maybe, just maybe, she would start to see that I wasn't faking any of this—that my feelings were real, and that I was ready to be all in.
As I watched her interact with the group, her laughter mingling with theirs, I realized that the lines between our fake relationship and reality were blurring. Whatever happened next, I was ready to see where this thing with Josy would go. And if there was even a chance that what we had could be real, I was determined to find out.
