THE NEXT MORNING, the group and the warriors of Cumbraland were off to Eoferwic. They rode for a while, stopping on the way to rest the horses and settle for the night.

Celise had made up Hild's hair, strands being pulled into beads before being tied behind her head. She was decked in chainmail she had earned from one of the dead Danes, and Celise had given her the tea when she was sick the previous night from the decapitation.

The healer had gone to Halig afterwards, asking if he could accompany her to collect some flowers and herbs out in the nearby field. He had nodded, saying that he would when Hild passed them, a sack with heads being carried that made Celise gag.

"Halig," she addressed, her voice deadpan. "Our prisoner requires attention." She continued walking as the man looked at the Dane that was sitting on the ground.

"After this, I'll take you to gather," Halig promised, heading towards the Dane. Celise nodded, turning around and walking to collect her basket and her cloak.

Uhtred came up to her. "You are going to gather?"

She nodded. "Halig is taking me after the Dane relieves himself. There are some herbs I want to get because I need to make more of my salves."

"I can take you now, if you wish," Uhtred offered. "I have nothing to do, and who knows how long the Dane will take."

She giggled at him rolling his eyes. "You know, you do not need to treat him with such ferocity. He may wish to forsake Kjartan and join you."

Uhtred scowled. "I will not trust him."

"No matter, I think that is what he has in mind. If he really was such a warrior, would he not have figured out escape by now? Even when we were on the road? He does not seem to be weak, you know, if he is one of Kjartan's men."

The great warrior smiled gently at her. "You are insightful. If he makes the offer, I shall turn to you."

She grinned. "And if you do, I shall tap my nose twice to tell you that I trust him."
