THE PIT STOP in Winchester took longer than the group thought. Brida had gone to Loidis to raise the army of Danes that was needed to take back Dunholm from Kjartan. With Uhtred and Gisela's wedding, Æthelwold's added company, and the appointment of his bodyguard nicknamed 'the widowmaker' that he seemed rather frightened of, business in Winchester was concluded, and they began their ride to Eoferwic.

On the road, the guard, Aldric, he was called, was silent the whole time, ignoring Æthelwold's attempts at conversation. He was silent for the ride to Loidis, only letting out exasperated sighs at every word that escaped the blonde man's mouth. Celise noticed Myrna's smirk whenever he did so.

The evening had come, the group sitting at a table near the alehouse in Loidis where Brida's army had gathered.

"Guthred is seen as weak and friendless," the brunette Dane spoke. "These men won't fight the brothers for a turd."

"We need the turd's army to take Dunholm," Uhtred sighed.

"So, why not kill the Northmen, then kill the turd, take Eoferwic and its army for yourself?"

"The woman's got a point," Finan muttered.

"No, she does not have a point," Beocca chastised. "Those are the words of a traitor."

"I don't want Eoferwic," Ragnar placated. "All I want is Kjartan's heart on the end of my sword, and to see my sister."

"We will need Guthred's army," his brother repeated. Celise was sat in between Finan and Aldric, taking it all in with the still full cup of ale sitting in front of her. Myrna was sat between Aldric and Ragnar, looking more interested in the splintering wood of the edge of the table than the conversation going on around her.

"I promised these men silver and the glory of avenging your father," Brida emphasised. "Don't dishonour them by getting them killed for Guthred, the turd." With that, she walked off, patting her lover on the shoulder as she left. She caught eyes with Celise and inclined her head, silently asking to speak with her.
