⊰❃⊱UNFORTUNATELY, SIHTRIC AND the others arrived just as Aldhelm did. Luckily, she resided in a castle, meaning that she did not get nor was allowed visitors, no matter who they were.
Her marriage to Aldhelm was to be only a private affair, settled quickly and quietly before Æthelflæd's own wedding. The Lord of Mercia himself had suggested it. Well, more like commanded. The King supported the idea, saying that time was of the essence. Really, he was just suspicious that Uhtred would kidnap her away back to Coccham, which would be bad if she were only engaged, but worse if she were married.
Sihtric, ever oblivious to the plot currently circulating in the royal house just behind him, stood awkwardly in the entrance of an alleyway as Uhtred spoke privately with Æthelwold.
The blonde man merely smirked and dropped his voice to a whisper. "Now that the situation with Bjorn is attended to, what about the situation regarding the Dane man there?"
The Lord of Coccham glared a deadly glare at the man, making him a little intimidated. "How do you know about that?"
A more sinister smirk spread over his face. "Who do you think gave him the idea?"
The realisation sparked in Uhtred's face, and the look he had was dangerous. "Why did you do it?"
"She's an Irish noble by blood, Uhtred. Maybe not by succession, but she is still a piece on the board. Her son would be connected to Mercia, and by extension, Alfred. Besides, she's rather attached to you, which I merely suggested was an excellent way to get your alliance." Uhtred lunged slightly forward as the blonde cowered at the wall. "Ah, ah. You can't kill me. You'd only put her in more danger."
The Dane's nostrils flared. Sihtric was still standing off beside a wall, unable to hear a word of what was happening behind his back. Uhtred sent Æthelwold off, coming to face Sihtric as he prepared to be the bearer of bad news.
He couldn't do it. "You'll be glad to hear that I have made my decision." His mind flooded with the pros and cons to this and they only added to a single con. "You may marry Celise..."
Sihtric's face broke out into a smile, his heart bursting with relief. "Thank you, Lord."
"...Upon completion of a task," the other Dane interrupted. "You'll fetch Clapa, you will go to the stables and wait for me. Ensure the horses are watered and fed, but ready."
The smile did not fall. "Yes, Lord."
"Go."
"Yes, Lord. And thank you!" The younger Dane began to run off. "We will name out first son Uhtred, Lord!"
