"Outer beauty attracts, but inner beauty captivates."
- Kate Angell, Squeeze Play
Now, his hair wasn't curtains. Now, it was long, unkempt bangs in the front. Why would he even change it? Shouldn't he know by now that I loved his hair? Now it looked similar to my hair. There would be no more silky threads that flutter in the wind, there would be no more shine.
That haircut was one of my favorite things about him. It may seem like it was a big deal to me, but that's because it was. His hair complimented everything about him. He looked like every other stupid popular straight boy. That's why I was mad. He cut his hair to fit in, and I hate it when people try to do that. I hate it when people change themselves for others. It's one of the most annoying traits humans have. We tend to believe that to fit in we need to change things about ourselves. That isn't true. So now when I look at him with his friends, I can barely tell the difference anymore.
The long weekend ended with me being terrified to see if he got a haircut. I thought that maybe the angle was the problem, but no. He really did get a haircut, and he really did look like every other boy. At recess, I was walking with Kayla. I began to talk about him, about how disgusting and crazy it was that he got his haircut. She, of course, paid no attention because she was used to it. I was staring at him walking towards me, but I decided I wasn't ready to face him and turned in the other direction. I didn't want to believe that my Oli, my sweet, lovely, caring underclassman changed overnight. Meeting him was inevitable though, I bumped into him and all he said was "Hi." No enthusiasm, just a simple greeting.
The lunch bell rang and I tried to avoid him still. He hadn't come to our lunch table yet, but Kayla wanted me to go to the bathroom with her. She also accidentally poked me in the eye so instead of going to the girl's bathroom, there in which I cannot even go in, we went to the nurse's office to get my eye an ice pack. My eyes began to water. After getting an ice pack, we walked down the steps and back to the courtyard when Nia stopped us. She said that while Kayla and I were gone, Oliver came by the table. She said he didn't ask where I was and only said hi to them. She told him that he should say hi to me and that I was walking with Kayla to the bathroom. He said not right now. I had no words. Yes I was avoiding him, and maybe he could tell, but he said hi to me earlier. I questioned if he was mad that I didn't want to see him. My eyes were still tearing up from Kayla poking me. They began to water even more.
