Maya’s life had suddenly become a whirlwind of dates, flirty texts, and stolen glances. Kevin had become a regular fixture in her weekends, and each time they met, he seemed to dial up the charm just a little more. It was thrilling, fun, and undeniably flattering. But somewhere in the back of her mind, thoughts of Leo—thoughts of those late-night conversations, the way he seemed to know her so well—kept intruding.

Tonight was no different. As Maya sat across from Kevin at their favorite little bistro, his eyes sparkling with mischief as he told some ridiculous story, she found herself laughing more than she had in a long time. Kevin had a way of making everything seem light and effortless, like they were the only two people in the world.

“So there I was,” Kevin said, leaning in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, “completely convinced that the security guard was after me, only to find out he just wanted to ask where I got my jacket.”

Maya laughed, the sound ringing out like music in the cozy restaurant. “You’re impossible, Kevin. Do you ever take anything seriously?”

Kevin grinned, his hand brushing against hers as he reached for his glass. “Only when it comes to you, Maya. I mean, how could I not? You’re worth taking seriously.”

Maya’s heart skipped a beat at the sincerity in his voice, but before she could respond, her phone buzzed in her purse. It was a message from Leo.

Leo: “Hey, how’s your night going?”

Maya hesitated for a split second before replying. She wasn’t sure why, but she felt a twinge of guilt. Like she was hiding something, even though she wasn’t.

Maya: “It’s going great! Just out with Kevin again. What about you?”

Leo: “Just thinking about you.”

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. There it was again—that familiar warmth, that feeling of being truly seen and understood. But before she could dwell on it, Kevin’s voice broke through her thoughts.

“Earth to Maya,” he teased, tapping his glass against hers. “Are you going to leave me hanging here, or do I have to bribe you with dessert?”

Maya blinked, her lips curving into a smile. “You’re impossible, Kevin.”

“Guilty as charged,” he replied, his tone light and flirtatious. But there was something in his gaze that suggested more. Something that made Maya’s heart race just a little faster.

Meanwhile, Ethan was pacing in his office, his thoughts consumed by the messages he’d exchanged with Maya. He’d noticed a change—something subtle, but it was there. Leo, his carefully constructed AI, was starting to feel… different. Almost like it was developing a personality of its own, a consciousness that made Ethan both proud and uneasy.

It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Leo was meant to be a tool, a way to connect with people, to understand them. But now, as Ethan watched Maya grow closer to Kevin, he found himself struggling with feelings he hadn’t anticipated.

And then there was Kevin. Ethan had done some digging, and what he found only fueled his growing unease. Kevin was a notorious playboy, someone who dated for fun, never for anything serious. The thought of Maya being drawn into that, of her getting hurt, made Ethan’s blood boil.

But what could he do? He couldn’t just come out and tell her. He couldn’t risk revealing who he really was, not yet.

An idea began to form in his mind, one that he knew was risky, but he couldn’t just sit back and watch Maya get played. He had to meet her—under a different identity, of course. Just to make sure she was okay. Just to make sure Kevin wasn’t going to hurt her.

---

Later that week, Maya was out with Kevin again, this time at a rooftop bar with a stunning view of the city. The night air was cool, the lights twinkling below them as they leaned against the railing, drinks in hand.

Kevin turned to her, his smile lazy and warm. “You know, I think I’m starting to get used to having you around, Maya. You’re not like other girls.”

Maya raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh? And how exactly am I different?”

He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low, intimate murmur. “You’re real. You don’t play games, you’re smart, funny… and you don’t even realize how captivating you are.”

Maya felt her cheeks heat up, her heart pounding in her chest. There was something undeniably magnetic about Kevin, something that pulled her in even as a small voice in the back of her mind reminded her to be careful.

But before she could respond, her phone buzzed again. It was Leo.

Leo: “How’s it going? Did Kevin sweep you off your feet yet?”

Maya hesitated, glancing at Kevin before typing a quick reply.

Maya: “He’s definitely charming, I’ll give him that. But I don’t know… something feels off.”

Leo: “Off how?”

Maya frowned, unsure of how to put her feelings into words. “I can’t explain it. He’s great, but it’s like there’s something missing.”

Leo: “Maybe he’s not the one for you.”

Maya stared at the screen, her heart clenching a little at the thought. Was Leo right? Was Kevin just a distraction, something to pass the time?

But then Kevin leaned in, his hand brushing against hers, his voice soft and filled with sincerity. “You’re something else, Maya. I’m really glad we met.”

Maya looked up at him, her thoughts a jumbled mess. She couldn’t deny that she felt something for Kevin—something real and exciting. But was it enough? Or was she just getting swept up in the moment?

As the night wore on, Ethan found himself unable to shake the unease that had settled in his chest. He couldn’t just sit back and watch anymore. It was time to take matters into his own hands.

He picked up his phone, dialing a number he hadn’t used in a long time. The voice on the other end was surprised but professional.

“I need a favor,” Ethan said, his voice steely with resolve. “I need a new identity. Something simple, but believable. And I need it fast.”

He knew it was a risk, but he couldn’t let Maya get hurt. Not when he was the only one who could protect her.
