The first day back at Alvaynia High School was an overwhelming assault of memories, both comforting and troubling, for Herculeana. The school loomed before her like an imposing fortress of glass and metal, with the sun reflecting off its towering, mirrored walls. In this city of the future, the structure epitomized sleek modernity—holographic displays floated outside the building, flashing vibrant announcements of upcoming events and achievements. Alvaynia itself was a marvel of human achievement, a city where technology and human ambition collided to create something almost divine.

Walking through the entrance felt both familiar and strange to Herculeana. The futuristic archway scanned her silently as she stepped through, taking in her biometrics—pulse, facial recognition, mood sensors—confirming her identity in mere seconds. Every student who entered went through the same process, an example of the technology's seamless integration into everyday life.

But for Herculeana, today felt different. Returning to school meant confronting her secrets, her past, and all that she had left behind when she fled to Egypt. She clutched her backpack tightly, taking in the pristine corridors with their holographic touchscreens lining the walls and interactive AI assistants guiding students. The sleek surfaces and quiet hum of machinery felt alien after her time away.

She let out a slow breath, her heartbeat steady but her mind racing. She wasn't the same person who had left months ago, and even though she had returned to familiar surroundings, nothing felt the same anymore.

As she entered the central corridor, a familiar voice broke through her thoughts. "Selena!"

Herculeana turned toward the voice, and there, standing by their usual locker, was Celia. Her golden hair shimmered under the school's artificial lighting, perfectly styled in a fashionable bob. She was wearing a jacket that seemed to shimmer with every movement, paired with form-fitting jeans that highlighted her effortless style. Her energy, as always, was infectious.

Celia rushed toward her, pulling Herculeana into a tight embrace. "I missed you so much!"

Herculeana smiled, but there was something guarded behind it. "I missed you too," she replied, though her heart wasn't entirely in it. The weight of her secrets hung between them, unspoken but heavy.

Celia pulled back, her eyes scanning Herculeana with a critical gaze.

Herculeana shrugged, brushing a loose strand of her curly dark hair behind her ear.

Celia looked at her, her usual bright demeanor dimming slightly. "We'll have to catch up later. I want to hear everything."

Herculeana nodded, grateful that Celia wasn't pressing her for details just yet. "Yeah. We will."

As they made their way to class, the school buzzed with the familiar sights and sounds of student life. In the distance, Herculeana caught sight of Azeilia, leaning against her locker, her eyes closed as if trying to shut out the world around her. Her dark curls were pulled back in a loose braid, and her clothing was simple but effective—a black top and jeans that seemed to mirror her current mood.

Herculeana's heart ached as she looked at her former close friend. There had been a time when the three of them—Herculeana, Celia, and Azeilia—were inseparable. But as the years passed, Azeilia had drifted away, her struggles becoming more pronounced and pulling her into isolation. Still, there was an undeniable bond that remained, even if it had faded.
