Lotte is 2
~~~
Today, because it was a race day, Susie had said she'd look after Lotte for Max and I. So that took some weight off my shoulders and I could watch Max's race and not have to worry about her."Good luck." I said to Max before he walked over to his car. "Be safe." I mumbled afterward. Do you ever get that awful gut feeling some days when you wake up that something awful is going to happen? That's what I'd got this morning and the fact it was a race day only made me feel worse.
"Thanks." Max said before walking off and lowering himself into his car. I wish I could stop him and say don't race today but I couldn't, I didn't have the strength and I knew he had to race anyways.
I watched as his car drove out the garage and down the pit lane ready to do the formation lap. The feeling in my gut only worsened and began to make me feel sick, I always had nerves before a race but not like this. I'd never been so nervous I was physically shaking, not even at Abu Dhabi 2021.
For once Checo was at the front of the grid and had done rather well in qualifying, which seemed to be a rarity nowadays. Throughout the race the grid had stayed tight together and after a pit stop Max had fallen behind Checo.
It was lap 32 and my nerves had calmed significantly, we were over halfway through the race and nothing had happened so I didn't expect anything to go wrong.
As Max gained on Checo using DRS, slipstream and his own skill he began to go around the outside, when Checo swerved a little and clipped Max's front tyre.
I watched as his car spun out off the track and slammed in the barriers, smashing debris everywhere. The garage fell silent and all our eyes were fixed to the screens showing Max as we waited for his radio to crackle to life and tell us he was alright. We waited and waited. Then it did.
"I'm ok." He said, no he wasn't. His voice was strained and I know him like the back of my hand there's no way he was ok.
Marshals swarmed around his car to help him out and my nerves only intensified as I saw him getting out. He pulled himself up before having to pause for a moment and rest on his halo. He then swung his legs out the car and lowered himself out before falling back onto it. It was as though he was a child learning to walk. A marshal reached out a hand to Max which he grabbed and almost dragged the marshal down as he stood up. A second marshal took his other arm and they helped Max stumble behind the barrier. Then I lost sight of him. He was not ok.
Then my mind flicked a switch, that crash was unavoidable. Checo veered into him, he should've let Max overtake him. He's the reason my husband can't fucking stand up. Then his radio appeared on the screen, it would seem he's thinking the exact same thing as me.
'Is Y/n in the garage?' Checo asked
'Yes.'
'Oh f***.'
