Rain pours over the commonwealth, thunder occasionally shaking the walls of the railroad's HQ. Desdemona leans over the table, her eyes scanning your companion carefully. "That is some fine work this so-called Doctor Amari performed on you, Codsworth. Your new synthetic body looks wonderful. I can't believe it's really you!"
Codsworth chuckles bashfully, "Oh, no need for flattery! But I must admit this body suits me just right. I can now help Miss Y/n far better than I ever could in my old, metal body."
Desdemona furrows her eyebrows, "You know Codsworth, you have free will now. There's no need to keep up the butler act."
"I am fully aware of that, miss," Codsworth replied, his tone unwavering. "But rest assured, I choose to serve Y/n of my own accord. She's like family to me, after all."
Desdemona sighs in defeat and smiles, "Well, Agent Y/n is very lucky to have you. Why did you decide to become a synth anyway?" She asks.
"Ah, well..." Codsworth hesitated for a moment. "It was a dear friend of mine, an ex-robot, who first opened my eyes to the possibilities her new form offered. I watched her run, dance, and care for Miss Y/n in ways that I, as I was, never could. One fateful day, I looked down at my cold, metal limbs and realized that, despite my exterior, I felt human within. But alas, no matter how deeply I wished to shed tears, not a single drop would fall."
Desdemona, now with a hand on her heart, struggled to speak "Codsworth... You were always human, even as a robot."
As you walk over to both of them from across the room, your hand is raised for a high five: "heyy, what's going on over there- woah, Mona, are you crying?"
She wipes the tears of her eyes and sniffles. "No, no, I was just talking to Codsworth here. Something the matter?" You raise your brow, "Yeah, uh, we were just about to leave. K-L-E-O has just given me the location of some synth components. If I can get my hands on it, we should be able to gather more information on The Institute and their plans."
Desdemona nods, "Right, be careful out there Y/n. That place is infested with raiders. It's a risky mission." Codsworth stiffens, "Mum, this sounds far more perilous than your usual undertakings. Are you sure—"
"I'm sure, Cods," you say firmly, your hand resting on his arm. "We've been through worse. Besides, I've got you with me."
Codsworth's heart skips a beat. Your determination gives him no room for argument. "Very well, mum," he replies, though his voice is tinged with reluctance. "I shall do my utmost to ensure your safety."
Desdemona watches the exchange, a faint smile playing on her lips. "You're braver than most, Y/n. Just remember, once you're in, there's no turning back. The raiders won't hesitate to shoot on sight, and we can't afford to lose you—or that prototype.
"I won't let you down," you assure her, standing tall. As you and Codsworth turn to leave, Desdemona calls out one last time.
"And Y/n... be careful. For all our sakes."
You glance back at her, nodding before stepping into the shadows of the city, Codsworth loyally by your side.
As you walk, the tension in the air thickens. Codsworth walks closer to you, "Mum, I must say, this mission seems unusually dangerous. Perhaps we should reconsider."
You chuckle softly, though you know he's serious. "Cods, you worry too much. We've faced raiders before. This is no different." He doesn't respond immediately, the worry in his eyes betraying his inner conflict.
"If I may speak freely, Mum, it's not the danger that troubles me. It's that you're constantly putting yourself at risk for others. You're always so willing to sacrifice your safety, but I worry that one day, the cost will be too great."
You blink, taken aback by his concern. "Codsworth, I'm doing what needs to be done. This mission could save lives. We can't let the Institute's technology fall into the wrong hands."
He frowns, his voice gentle but firm. "And what about your life, mum? You've done so much for everyone else—when was the last time you did something for yourself? I... I can't bear the thought of losing you."
His words hit you harder than you expected. You've always been the one to take risks, to dive headfirst into danger without a second thought. But now, hearing the raw vulnerability in Codsworth's voice, you realize just how much he's placing his trust in you. It's a trust you've never had to carry before, and the weight of it suddenly feels immense.
"Codsworth, you—... you mean a lot to me too... I know you're worried, but this is important. I'm not just doing this for them—I'm doing it because it's the right thing to do. You have to trust me on this."
He sighs, his resistance faltering as he gazes at you with a mix of admiration and sorrow. "You are indeed the most noble person I've ever known, mum. But please, promise me you'll be careful. I couldn't bear to see you hurt."
Your heart aches at his words, and you reach out to gently squeeze his hand. "I promise, Cods. We'll get through this together, like always." As you say the words, the reality of what you've promised sinks in. This is more than just a mission; it's a responsibility to Codsworth, to the trust he's placed in you. There is a comforting yet nervous feeling sweeping over your body as you try not to disappoint someone who has placed so much trust in you.
Your pip-boy began to tick, indicating that there were more rads than usual in this place. You take a deep breath, looking up at the subway station. "Well, here we go." You brush off the nervous feeling, reload your shotgun, and kick open the door.
