Nat shuffled her way through the hallway, her books pulled close to her body as she navigated through the crowd of people. It was nearing the end of the school day which had gone surprisingly well for Natalia. When she finally made it to the small science classroom and stepped through the open door, the bell rang on cue.
The class room had several tables facing the front of the room, lab equipment sitting out on the table. Each table had two stools paired with it. Nat's green eyes quickly scan the science lab for an empty seat. Most of the tables are already full. She felt relief wash over her when she recognizes a familiar face. Eli.
"Hey, new girl! Come sit with us." Kyler calls out. Whatever relief had vanished when she heard Kyler's annoying voice. To her left, Nat spots Kyler sitting with his usual group of friends. A charming smirk spreads across his face and he leans back.
Nat feels her anger rise within her as she remembers what Miguel had told her earlier. Kyler and his friends were the ones that harassed him at the mini-mart. Her jaw clenches and she takes a deep breath, not wanting to do something she'd regret. Nat rolls her eyes promptly and scoffs, flicking her long blonde hair over her shoulder and walking to the empty seat she'd rather be sitting at. Nat could feel Kyler's eyes on her, but she doesn't care. Her focus is on Eli, who looks up at her with a mixture of surprise and uncertainty.
"Are you sure you want to sit here?" Eli nearly whispers, his voice tinged with insecurity. His eyes flick towards Kyler's group, expecting them to start laughing him at any moment. Though, they were too busy teasing Kyler at Nat's decline of his invitation.
"Definitely." Natalia responds without missing a beat, flashing him a kind smile before sliding into the empty seat next to him. While Natalia got situated, Eli's mind churned with thoughts of doubts as he glanced at Nat. Eli couldn't figure her out. A part of him was convinced that she'd only sat with him and Demetri at lunch because of Miguel. Maybe she was just being nice, but he wondered how long that would last.
It wouldn't be the first time someone like Natalia, with her pretty face and confidence, ended up choosing the popular crowd over someone like him. His mind flashed back to Sam and Yasmine—girls who seemed nice on the surface, but who didn't hesitate to laugh along with the others when he was the target. Eli braced himself as he half expect Nat to suddenly change her mind, to laugh at him or to make fun of him just like the others did. He kept waiting for the punchline, the moment when she'd reveal she was just playing along and would join Kyler and his friends after all. Why wouldn't she?
