Natalia and her grandmother spent the rest of the day spending time together, consisting of sitting next to each other in their living room while reading and listening to the radio. Nat also helped her grandmother with some chores and crafts around the house, trying her best to absorb the older lady's instructions on how to sew. Though, they did take a short break mid-day to stop by the grocery store. It was night now, the sun having just set. The moon peaks out from the gray clouds overlooking the California valley.
Nat had changed into her strawberry pajama set consisting of a tank top and shorts, pairing it with some bunny slippers that her grandmother had gotten her that previous Christmas. Her bright blonde hair is pulled into loose pigtails that lay over her shoulders. The girl sits on a chair they have set out in front of their front door, wanting a change of scenery. The light bulb in the complex buzzes and flashes every so often, needing a new bulb.
It was rather quiet, despite the sound of the some noisy cars with annoying mufflers. The gentle hum of the radio inside of the apartment could be heard outside, having Nat hum softly to herself while she stared at the book pages. She was reading the third Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It was a favorite of hers, one she could never get tired of reading. The book was worn with love and the corner of the pages were slightly warped and bent. Nat always liked it this way. She liked to think it adds character. Even though she had read the book countless times, she was still at the edge of her seat.
Just when she was about to find out if Harry could conjure a Patronus to protect himself and his friends from the Dementors, she heard approaching footsteps. She looks up and when she makes out the dimly illuminated figure, she stands up from her chair. The book swings lamely in her hands.
"Miguel?" She calls out, having the figure stop and turn to her. Miguel holds his head down in defeat and sighs before pulling his eyes up to meet the young girl's. Nat gasps when she makes out the pink liquid that is spilt over his head, down onto his clothes.
"Oh my god, what happened?" She softly asks, rushing over to him and looking over his troubled body. Miguel shakes his head pitifully and he fidgets with his hands aimlessly.
"I was buying pepto-bismol for my Yaya at the mini mart and I sort of blew these guys' cover when they were trying to buy some alcohol. They got mad at me and then..." Miguel trails off, gesturing to his state. Nat can't help but feel her heart twist at the sight of the boy. She offers him a sympathetic smile.
"I'm sorry." She whispers to him. Miguel connects his brown eyes with her green ones, feeling his mood lighten at the sight of the girl.
"It's okay, its not your fault." He assures. "Believe it or not, Mr. Sunshine next door actually helped me. He beat them up. Took down all four of them by himself." Natalia raises her eyebrows in shock.
"Wow I didn't know he had it in him." She laughs. Miguel gives a tight-lipped smile before taking a deep breath and glancing at his apartment door. Nat can see hesitation in him, but doesn't fully understand why. Miguel looks back towards her and notices her inquisitive look. Her eyes look soft and expectant, urging him to tell her. So he does.
"I just don't want my Mom to see. She'll get worried." The boy admits shyly and the girl nods, listening intently.
"If you want, you can come shower at my house to get the pink out of your hair. I think we have some of my grandfathers shirts you can borrow." Nat suggests kindly.
"Yeah, yeah that'd be great actually."

Miguel opened the bathroom door, his dark brown hair wet and sticking to his forehead. The green sweater that Nat allowed him to borrow nearly swallowed him whole.
"Sorry about the size, my granddad had quite a beer belly." She laughed lightly, approaching him as he emerged from the small bathroom. Miguel laughed lightly and smiled at her gratefully.
"Thanks again, I owe you one."
"Of course, anytime Migs. Although I do think the pink made your eyes pop." Natalie giggled and beamed a bright smile at him that Miguel couldn't help but reciprocate. Miguel was beginning to notice how everything seemed to lighten around her. The short girl just radiated joy.
"Migs?" He questions the new nickname with a smile on his face, quirking up a playful eyebrow. The girl shrugs and makes her way over to the kitchen.
"Rather I call you Pinkie?" She jokes, opening one of the cabinets and getting up on her tiptoes to reach a bottle high on the shelf.
"Definitely not." Miguel smiles and shakes his head. Miguel looks around the small apartment, noticing how similar their layout was. Except the girl's was vibrant in color and full of life, kind of like her.
"Here, take this. We barely use it. I don't think my Nana would mind." Natalia gifts a nearly full bottle of pepto bismol to Miguel who takes it graciously with a thank you. Light footsteps approach and a soft meow pulls the teens' conversation to a halt.
"That's Buttons. He's 8. The man of the house." Natalia tells Miguel, bending down to pat the cat's head. Miguel gives a shy wave to the cat, not really having experience with pets. Buttons meows again and rubs himself on Miguel's leg in greeting.
"Aw, he likes you." Nat gushes and Miguel gives the small white animal an unsure smile. The boy bends down to and pets the cat hesitantly, earning a purr. Natalia watches as Miguel navigates how to interact with the overly friendly cat with a small smile.
"Here, let me get your number." Natalia says before Miguel leaves to go back to his apartment. The boy pulls out his phone quickly and hands it to the blonde girl.
"So, are you going to West Valley High too?" Miguel asks while Natalia types in her phone number into his phone. Natalia nods her head.
"Yeah, I'll be a sophomore. You?" Natalia creates a contact for herself on Miguels phone before texting herself so she'd have Miguel's number.
"Same. It's weird though. Changing schools and everything." Natalia turns off the phone and hands it back to Miguel after hearing her phone ding in response to the received text.
"I feel you. It'll be my first day too." She sympathizes. Miguel scrunches his eyebrows.
"Did you just move here too?" He questions, confusion on his face.
"No, I've lived here for a couple years. I actually am skipping a grade, so instead of being a freshman I'll be a sophomore." Natalia explains.
"Ooh, so you're smart. Maybe you can do my algebra homework." Miguel jokes, but theres a slight proposition in his voice. Almost as though he's hoping Natalia would say yes. But she does the opposite.
"No way, Pinkie. I'll help you study though." Natalia bites her lips when he scrunches his face at the nickname, trying to keep her bubbling laughter at bay. After saying goodbye and heading back to his apartment, Natalia leans on the open doorframe watching him walk to his door.
"Hey, next time you go out, text me. I'll come with." Natalia lays her head on the doorframe and smiles at him with her perfect toothy grin. Miguel smiles back at the girl, feeling a weight come off his shoulders. He was no longer feeling nervous about starting school, but rather excited at the idea of having made a friend so quickly into moving to Reseda.
"Only if you promise to wear those killer bunny slippers." He teases, glancing at my fuzzy slippers with a mischievous look. Nat glances at them and shuffles her feet, her cheeks flushing at the realization she's been wearing her pajamas. Nat holds up her fingers, crossing them in promise and giving him a playful smile before turning back and going to bed.
