Back of the book

Lily and Ryle have just settled into a civil co-parenting rhythm with their daughter, Emerson, when Lily suddenly runs into Atlas nearly two years after they last spoke. Elated that the timing finally seems to be right to give what they have together a real chance, Atlas asks Lily on a date.

My thoughts

This book was complete fan service. An extended epilogue, canon fanfiction of the fairytale ending. If there were any doubts, the author explicitly states in a preface that the fans made this book possible because we were so desperate for more.

As a fan of the original book, I enjoyed it. As a fan service book it lacked plot, conflict or stakes that we cared about. There was a lot of repeated content with several 'Dear Ellen' letters being included in full, then with Atlas's take on what was going on in his life at the time. That felt very cheap in the lack of creating new content, Hoover did not have to reach far for those scenes.

I liked the storyline of Atlas's little brother, the only original thing in this book. Of course it was easy to create tension between Lily and Ryle because Ryle is the type of person who creates drama. Again, Hoover did not have to work hard to make most of the elements of this book come together.

It's a very mushy story, with lots of sappy emotional moments. This can become over the top but I knew what I was in for and enjoyed it. I wouldn't recommend anyone to read this book without reading It Ends With Us, and if you like novels with substance don't read it either. It wasn't a literary masterpiece but an enjoyable comfort read.

TL:DR

A feel-good extended epilogue for It Ends With Us to give you more content, no drama and warm and fuzzy feelings.
