She didn't know what to do with herself. Nestled in a guest bedroom, hidden under thick covers with the curtains closed. Guilt surrounded her, she felt responsible and resentful. Unable to be happy and thinking only about what happened.
Going into this field, Onika knew that there will be situations where someone may pass. But, to be so attached to a patient and losing them so soon, it was hard for her to accept. She didn't even dare to tell Beyoncé why she was feeling so sick, leaving the older woman to wonder if it was just more symptoms.
She'd been throwing up more than usual, her stomach not holding down much of anything anymore. Her senses overwhelmed and feeling so disgusting that even the thought of spending the glorious holiday with family became the biggest headache for her.
Beyoncé found this to be the most straining period they've ever faced. She understood her girlfriend's stress and wanted nothing more than to relieve it by bringing her around family and spoiling her rotten with love and adoration.
The blonde missed being able to kiss Onika's face every single second, but she knew better than to overstep. If Onika wanted space, then that was what she'd have.
She paced around the living room, her eyes roaming over to the pile of gifts she got her lover. She knew none would equate to how much she genuinely appreciated and loved Onika, but it was rewarding to see the joy on her girlfriend's face regardless.
"She won't come down, Momma. Not even to eat. I leave food by the door and sometimes she'll take it, but this isn't healthy for her or the baby," The blonde sighed, her fingers raking through her hair. "I'm scared."
"She just needs time, Bey. From what I understand she was probably very close with this particular patient. Working in healthcare is hard enough, but watching someone die is even harder. Her body and mind are fighting to manage her grieving state. Just be patient." Her mother told her. Beyoncé ran her hand down her face before releasing a breath and nodding.
"Alright, but I can't play if she isn't doing well. I'm not even in the mood to be on the court anymore, I just want to take care of the woman I love. Seeing her like this, so unhappy, it's killing me, Momma." Her heart was heavy, full of what felt so much like a loss. The distance was killing her, not knowing how to help Onika was killing her.
"Patience, Giselle. She'll come around sooner or later. She'll have to. When she does, remind her to call me, okay?"
"Okay, Ma. I'll see y'all soon. I love you."
"I love you, too." Tina hung up, leaving her daughter to revel in the silence of her home. She turned to go to the kitchen, pausing her movements at the sight of Onika sitting and waiting patiently on the stairs. The pair shared a glance, the blonde slowly making her way over.
