Jia stood in the living room, the phone in her hand in a vedio call as she spoke to her mother. It had been a while since they had a proper conversation, and she valued these moments of connection despite the hectic schedule she was currently in.
"Yes, I've eaten, don't worry," Jia replied with a slight smile. "You know I always eat breakfast before training."
"Don't lie to me, Yena told me the other day that you are not having proper meals, you even skipped breakfast many times", her mom nagged at her through the phone.
Jia sighed and rolled her eyes as her mother scolded her through the phone. She knew Yena had betrayed her by snitching on her eating habits, but she couldn't really blame her. The other girl was just looking out for her.
"I don't skip breakfast all the time," Jia defended herself. "I just forget sometimes when I'm in a rush but I do grab a snack from the cafeteria."
Jia's mother sighed on the other end of the phone, clearly not convinced by Jia's defense. She knew her daughter all too well and could tell when she was being dishonest.
"Jia, you need to take care of yourself," her mother chided. "You're working so hard, but you can't neglect your health. Promise me you'll eat properly, even when you're busy."
Jia couldn't help but smile as she heard her mother's concern. She knew her mom cared about her deeply and just wanted the best for her.
"Okay, okay, I promise," Jia relented. "I'll make sure to eat properly, I swear. You don't have to worry about me, Mom. I'm taking care of myself."
After assuring her mother that she would take care of herself, Jia shifted the conversation to her dad and younger brother. She asked how they were doing and if they were taking care of themselves as well.
"How's Dad? Is he taking care of himself?" Jia inquired. "And what about Yan? Is he eating well and studying hard?"
Her mom assured her saying that they were doing well and now her dad was at work but he would call her soon.
Just as Jia was about to end the call, she saw her younger brother, Yan, who just came out of his room still half asleep.
He just glanced at his mom's phone to she who she was talking to so early in the morning then turned around to go back to his room.
"Hey dorky! Where are the manners? No hi hello or how are you?", Jia yelled at him through the speakers which made him stop on his tracks. He just turned around with his still half lidded eyes.
"Goognight", saying that he again went back to his room.
Jia just looked at him in shock with her mouth parted slightly with an offended look.
