Most of the time in court was a blur. Such a blur that I hardly knew why I was sat in a truck with a man that kept taking glances at me.
"Are you just gonna keep looking at me or..?" I accidentally said out loud, making him look like a deer caught in headlights.
"Fuck I'm sorry..it's just you look so much like when your mother was younger" he sighed "you've got her eyes" he smiled a little. Everyone said that but I didn't know if I was to take it as a compliment or not. I had the same grey eyes that she did, full lips, pale skin and blonde hair, although hers was honey blonde whilst mine was butter blonde, but my freckles could make it easy for others to tell me apart from her.
"Oh.." that was all I could say, I didn't know whether to thank him or not so it was difficult to know what I should have said instead. The tension between us was so thick you could practically see it, what was I supposed to say to him thanks for leaving me for years and letting me go through absolute torture?
Instead I listened to the radio, trying to block out any thoughts I had at all.
As we drove I saw signs pass, signifying that we were going through different towns. Where exactly were we going?
We seemed to have been driving for hours, until eventually we went down a small road and all the houses were replaced with trees. Unlike how most girls would react, my eyes lit up at the sight of the trees and to make things even better animals were within the trees. Deer's, foxes, wolves.
"Beautiful aren't they?" He said, smiling at my reaction as I nodded.
Suddenly we pulled into a driveway in front of a massive cabin. The cabin looked beautiful, making me smile even more. It was at least four floors high, it had massive windows and almost each room from the second floor up had a balcony connected to it.
As much as I was happy I also felt a pang of sadness as I looked at it. Dad had clearly done well for himself and my brothers, and they had left me and mum with nothing. Did they not ever think about me?
"Come on" dad lifted the luggage out of the back, not that I had much with me, and took them inside "I'm sure there's some people who can't wait to see you" he winked as I followed him into the cabin.
It looked even bigger on the inside, the front door opening into a large hallway that had two big stairs leading up.
"Hi my love!" A chirpy woman's voice called out as a black haired woman with tanned skin and brown eyes walked out and instantly kissed dad on the cheek. Looking down at her hand I saw a wedding ring and instantly I recognised his too.
He had gotten married?! I knew it was what? 10 years... Since they left, but he had gotten married? He really had moved on with his life. So what was the point of having me here? What was the point of going to court in the first place?
"And you must be Avery?" The woman looked at me with a smile, as I nodded softly. "Do come on in, make yourself at home"
As we walked into the living room, 3 boys and 2 girls were sat watching some film. Well technically 4 of them were watching the film, one was reading a book.
"Meet my daughters! Bella and Angelica" the woman nodded her head to the two girls. Had me and mum truly been replaced?
"Hi" Bella, a girl with the same fair skin as her mother, but lighter brown hair and green eyes looked up at me, her expression being impossible to tell what she was thinking.
"Sup" the other girl, Angelica, looked up at me, seemingly more relaxed, unlike Bella, she was the spitting image of her mother.
Placing the book down, the boy who was reading looked up at me, he had paler skin than I did, the same dark brown hair as dad and wore glasses, the only similar feature we had was our grey eyes, just his was a darker grey than mine. Seemingly surprised by me being here, he simply stared at me for a few seconds. It was difficult to know if he had truly acknowledged me as he didn't say a word, instead not long after he picked back up his book. Maybe he felt as awkward of me being here as i did?
Taking me to surprise one of the other boys suddenly brought me into an embrace. As soon as he pulled back i was able to take a look at him, he had lighter brown hair, brown eyes and practically towered over me, he must have been at least 6'1. But what made him really stand out was his freckles, my freckles. "sorry.. i-" he mumbled.
"you don't have to apologise" truthfully i needed that hug, i've been needing a hug for years.
Looking behind him i saw the final boy staring at me, he looked like he was staring way past what i looked like and into my soul. It made me uncomfortable but there was a second emotion lingering, just i didn't know what it was. Tilting his head to the side he simply smirked at me, what on earth was he thinking?
"Miles could you show Avery to her room?" Dad asked the boy who had hugged me.
"of co-" before he could finish his sentence the previous boy stood up.
"I will." His words were stern as he looked at dad and Miles in a way that if i didn't know, looked almost threatening. "come on Avery" he nodded towards the stairs and i couldn't do anything but follow him.
He took me up the stairs to a long corridor which lead to another set of stairs, taking me up them he took me along a second corridor and abruptly pinned me against a wall. "your afraid of me" he stated, looking down at me. I already felt tiny stood next to Miles, but he was even taller, maybe 6'4 or 6'5.
"right now yes. you have me pinned against a wall for no reason" I tried looking brave but it was pointless when he was this close to me.
"don't play smart with me bambina" he commanded lifting up my chin and staring into my eyes, the smirk never leaving his face. "You were scared of me as soon as you saw me" he continued, stroking his thumb across my bottom lip "tell me bambina was it because of my looks" he whispered under his breath "or because i was staring at you"
The way he was acting brought tears to my eyes, making his expression soften a little "shh i'm not gonna hurt you" he told me, brushing my tear away. Before he could say anything else another boy came up the stairs, instantly making him pull away.
"Aeson" He looked at the boy, both of them looking at each other with a strong demeanour.
"Zake" the boy answered before looking at me, unlike Zake he only looked for a slight second before turning away and walking down the corridor to possibly another set of stairs.
"Zake! What are you doing up there?!" Hearing dad's voice, Zake instantly sighed before leaning in closer to me.
"tu sei mia bambina, il tuo corpo, la tua anima, il tuo cuore, tutto mi appartiene" he muttered something in another language under his breath before pointing to the door behind me "that's your room, need anything, my room is at the end of that corridor" he pointed to the corridor Aeson walked by "and Miles is that room" He pointed to a door opposite mine. "I wouldn't disturb Zandros, Xaden or Aeson" He warned me like he wasn't just pinning me against the wall a second ago.
"Why?" If i was to be staying here i deserved to know why right?
"Xaden and Zandros tend to keep to themselves" he answered but it made me wonder more about Aeson
"And Aeson?" I asked, simply becoming more curious but instead of getting an answer Zake just shook his head, whispered "don't go near him" before walking away, leaving me to question the god's why i was even taken here.
