Trent sighed, shaking his head. Duncan was staring at his fiancee slackjawed while Gwen was staring at HIM slackjawed.

Trent had to admit, he did look handsome. Dressed in a sleek black suit, with a simple pink rose pinned to his blazer, he looked great.

So did Courtney. She looked like the belle of the ball, clad in a beautiful green dress. Their outfits coordinated, simple yet stunning.

Trent shook his head again. He had to make conversation with his ex.

He walked up to Gwen in nine steps, and as he approached she gasped slightly.

"T-Trent! Uh- hey!" Gwen said a bit too cheerfully.

Trent smiled warmly.

"Hey there Gwen. How are you enjoying the party so far? I thought of it to be a bit too much, but Courtney really went all out. Don't you think?" he asked, aiming for some conversation.

Gwen had no choice but to nod and smile. After all, he invited her, so she should be grateful she wasn't cooped up at home, watching a really gory slasher movie or something.

But part of her wished it was her Trent was marrying. Not Courtney.

-

Duncan eyed Courtney and Trent as they danced to Lana Del Rey's Brooklyn Baby (which he remembered was in the playlist they had made when they were first together).

He was practically seething with jealousy as Trent spun Courtney around, her delicate hands in his calloused ones.

Snap out of it, Duncan!

His stomach sunk as Courtney shot a carefree glance his way, barely acknowledging his existence.

She looked beautiful. So beautiful.

Duncan's ears turned red with shame and jealousy as Trent kissed Courtney's hand.

He was going to get his girl back, one way or another.

Even if it meant breaking her heart in the process.

-

Heather refilled her punch/champagne mix, drunkenly stumbling over to Justin, who was calmly sipping his lemon iced tea/champagne mix.

After all, everyone needs champagne, am I right?

"Justin, don't they look so good together?" Heather mumbled, downing her glass in one shot.

The Hawaiian man nodded, lifting his lips up from his cup.

"Sure they do. I know that, but I also know Trent loves me, and that Courtney loves you." He put a chiselled finger to Heather's lips just as she was about to start talking. "And yes, I did see Trent talking to Gwen. I'm not blind."

Heather pulled Justin's finger off her lips.
"I know you did. But would you not be jealous? Like, I know Courtney wouldn't cheat on me with that lowlife pig, but what about you?"

Justin shook his head. "Trent wouldn't do that. Besides, why would he get back together with Gwen? He hates her."

Heather shrugged. "Just asking, Justin."

-

Gwen sighed, moving over to the punch.

It didn't seem like Trent wanted her back that much, after all his eyes were on Courtney the whole time.

And it's really damn hard to not wish she was the one dancing with him.

She lifted her head, eyeing Heather and Justin taking in the corner. She could just make out what they were saying.

And then she heard it.

"Trent wouldn't do that. Besides, why would he get back together with Gwen? He hates her."

Gwen's eyes welled up with tears as she clamped a pale hand to her mouth. Everything blurred, and she could just hear Heather and Justin talk about how beautiful the party was.

Thoughts raced through Gwen's mind, coating her brain with ideas about what Justin had just said so clearly.

But one was clearer than most.

What if Trent really didn't want her back?

That, she couldn't take.
