The nightclub was alive with pulsing beats and neon lights, the bass thumping so hard it vibrated in Alexa's chest. She wasn't in the mood for a party, but she had forced herself to come anyway.
After the emotional rollercoaster of the past few days, she needed a distraction-something to take her mind off Jude, the tabloids, and the mess that had become her life.
The party was hosted by a fellow actor who had just wrapped up a successful movie shoot. The guest list was a who's who of Hollywood and sports stars, blending two worlds that were increasingly intertwined.
Alexa knew she would be expected to socialize, smile for the cameras, and keep up the appearance of a life that was perfectly under control. But all she wanted to do was fade into the background and drink enough to forget everything for a little while.
She pushed her way through the crowded dance floor, weaving between the throngs of people.
The air was thick with the smell of sweat, perfume, and alcohol, a dizzying combination that made her head spin.
She spotted a few familiar faces-some she liked, some she'd rather avoid—and finally found her way to the bar.
"Tequila," she ordered, leaning against the counter.
The bartender nodded and quickly poured her a shot. She knocked it back without hesitation, welcoming the burn as it slid down her throat.Another shot followed, and then another.
She could feel the tension in her shoulders start to loosen, the alcohol doing its job of numbing the edges of her thoughts.
As she turned to leave the bar, her eyes landed on a familiar figure standing near the VIP section.
Jude.
He was talking to a group of people she recognized as football players, but she couldn't place their names. They were all laughing, clearly enjoying themselves. Jude looked relaxed, his guard down in a way she hadn't seen before.
He was wearing a dark shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms, and jeans that fit him just right. Alexa's stomach flipped at the sight of him, and she quickly averted her gaze, hoping he hadn't seen her.
She considered leaving the party altogether.
But before she could make a decision, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Startled, she turned around to find one of her actress friends, Lydia, smiling at her.
"Alexa! I didn't know you'd be here," Lydia said, pulling her into a hug.
Alexa returned the embrace, trying to muster up some enthusiasm. "Yeah, just needed a night out," she replied.
Lydia's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Well, you're in the right place. This party is insane! Come on, let's dance."
Before Alexa could protest, Lydia grabbed her hand and dragged her onto the dance floor.
