Chapter 16: If today was your last day

I don’t exactly know what I was expecting Lena’s house to look like, but it definitely wasn’t this. The exterior of the small house was a pale yellow color, and the shutters were a dark blue to match the front door.

It looked like a happy place to live in, but I knew it wasn’t from what Lena had told me.

Lena searched for the keys in her bag, and when she found them she stuck them in the keyhole.

She took a deep breath, and glanced at me. I smiled at her, knowing this was a big step for her. She smiled back, and then opened the door.

The inside of the house was the complete opposite of the outside. The sunlight barely came in because of the shut curtains, and everything was pale, dreary and run down.

I could see why Lena needed help with the cleaning. The place smelled a bit like an old dusty house, and from where I was standing, I could see the sink, which was filled with dirty dishes.

Lena was staring at me, trying to read my face. When she saw me looking back she lowered her head in shame. I walked over to her, and lifted her chin so that I could see her eyes.

“It’s me, Lena. There is no reason to be ashamed.” I whispered gently.

“It’s hard not to be. Look at this place.”

“The only thing that’s missing is sunlight!” I declared, as I walked over to the curtains and opened them.

The sunlight streamed in, and immediately the room lightened up, and looked happier. The sun also hit Lena on the face, which made her dark blue eyes look lighter. A small smile was appearing on her face.

“And some fresh air.” I continued as I opened the window. The sounds from the streets could be heard now, which made the room seem more alive and a gust of wind entered which drove away the old smell.

“And music!” I announced as I turned on the radio. A song that I didn’t recognize was on.

Lena seemed to know it though, since her smile grew and she quietly said: “I love this song.”

“It’s a sign.” I said, and I put out my hand for her. She took it, and I pulled her towards me. We started dancing first slowly, but the more time passed the more Lena let loose, and became her self again. When the song ended, I bowed, and she laughed.

“Okay the fun is over now! We only have thirty minutes to get this cleaned up.” She said still smiling.

“Who said we can’t have fun while cleaning?” I asked with a sly grin.

Lena cocked her head to the side with a confused expression. I grabbed two brooms and threw one to her. She caught it.

A new song came on. A song I actually knew; F*** you, by Cee Lo Green.

“I see you driving round town with the girl I love, and I’m like F* you!” I sang into my broom while wiggling my eyebrows suggestively at Lena.

She let out a snort of laughter, and clamped her hand on her mouth. I kept on singing, as I started sweeping the floor. She quickly joined in with the cleaning, but she didn’t dare sing.

“Come on Lena! Sing.” She shook her head. “For me?” I begged. That seemed to be the motivation she needed, because all of a sudden she grabbed the broom at the end and bend down while singing in it.

“Cause being in love with your ass ain’t cheap!”

We kept on going like this during the whole song. Sweeping and singing at the same time. When the song ended, we decided to clean the dishes.
