Elara ran through the forest, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her heart pounding in her chest. The trees blurred around her as she fled, the cool morning air biting at her skin. She pushed herself harder, desperate to put as much distance between herself and Kael as possible. But no matter how far she ran, she couldn't escape the thoughts that chased her—thoughts of Kael, of the moment he had let her go.

She had expected the worst when he pinned her to the ground, his sword at her throat. The fear that had gripped her in that moment was like nothing she had ever felt before. But then, something had changed. She had seen it in his eyes, felt it in the way his grip on the sword had loosened. He had hesitated, and in that hesitation, she had glimpsed a side of him she hadn't known existed—a side that couldn't bring himself to harm her.

He had let her go.

The thought was like a drumbeat in her mind, echoing over and over as she ran. Why had he spared her? Why had he let her live when it would have been so easy to end it all right there? The questions gnawed at her, pulling her focus away from everything else.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the rebel hideout came into view. The familiar sight of the entrance, hidden among the trees, brought a surge of relief that washed over her like a wave. She slowed her pace, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts as she approached the entrance, her legs trembling with exhaustion.

The guards at the entrance nodded as she passed, their expressions unreadable, but Elara barely registered them. Her mind was still spinning, her thoughts consumed by the encounter with Kael.

She made her way through the winding tunnels, the dim light of the hideout's torches flickering against the stone walls. Everything seemed surreal, as if she were moving through a dream. The faces of the rebels she passed blurred together, their greetings falling on deaf ears. All she could think about was Kael—his face, his eyes, the way he had looked at her as if she were more than just a mission.

When she finally reached her dorm, Elara pushed the door open and stepped inside, closing it softly behind her. The small, simple room was a welcome sight, a refuge from the chaos of the outside world. But even here, in the safety of the hideout, she couldn't escape the thoughts that plagued her.

She sank onto the bed, burying her face in her hands as she tried to make sense of everything. The memories of the morning played over and over in her mind—the fight, the fear, the way Kael had hesitated, and the look in his eyes when he had let her go. It didn't make any sense. He had been sent to capture her, to bring her back to the Magi Order. It was his duty, his mission. And yet, he had spared her life.

Elara lifted her head, staring blankly at the wall in front of her. Why had he done it? Why had he let her go? She wanted to believe that it was because he had seen the truth—that she wasn't a threat, that she didn't want to hurt anyone. But deep down, she knew it was more complicated than that.

There had been something in his eyes, something she couldn't quite put into words. It was as if he had been fighting a battle within himself, a battle between the man he had been trained to be and the man he truly was. And in that moment, the man he truly was had won.

Elara's heart ached with a mixture of confusion and something else—something she wasn't ready to admit to herself. She had seen a side of Kael that no one else had, a side that had spared her life when it would have been easier to end it. And that side of him, that glimpse of vulnerability, had shaken her to her core.

She couldn't stop thinking about him. No matter how hard she tried to push the thoughts away, they kept coming back, pulling her deeper into a whirlwind of emotions. Kael was supposed to be her enemy, the one sent to capture her and bring her to the Magi Order. But now, she wasn't sure what he was to her anymore.
