After leaving Kael in his quarters, Elara felt the need to clear her head. The conversation had left her unsettled, and she needed some space to process everything. The new hideout was vast, with tunnels and chambers stretching on endlessly, but it also offered her a chance to find solace in familiar faces. As she wandered through the corridors, her mind buzzed with conflicting thoughts—her conversation with Kael, her new responsibilities, the weight of the crown she had never wanted. It was all too much. She knew she needed someone to talk to, someone who would understand.
The sound of metal clashing against metal caught her attention—the unmistakable rhythm of combat training. Her heart lifted, and she quickened her pace, following the sound until she reached a spacious training room. Inside, rebels were sparring, their movements precise and focused. But it wasn't the fighters who caught her attention—it was the tall, fierce figure at the center, commanding the room with her presence.
"Lyra!" Elara called out, relief flooding her voice.
Lyra turned at the sound of her name, her eyes widening in surprise before a broad grin spread across her face. "Elara!" she exclaimed, dropping the practice sword and running toward her friend. The two women embraced tightly, the tension of the past few days melting away in the comfort of each other's presence.
"I was so worried about you," Elara admitted as they pulled back from the hug. "I haven't seen you since the attack. I thought—"
"I know," Lyra interrupted, her tone softening. "I thought the same about you. But I'm here, and so are you. We're alive, and that's what matters."
Elara nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah. We made it."
They moved to a quieter corner of the room, away from the noise of the ongoing training. Lyra's expression grew serious as she began to recount the events after the attack. "It was chaos," she said, her voice low. "When the Order attacked, we lost so many. Seraphine... well, you know what happened. After that, Eldrin took charge. We scattered, regrouped here, and tried to figure out our next move."
Elara listened intently, her heart heavy with the reminder of the losses they had suffered. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there," she whispered. "I tried to help, but..."
Lyra shook her head, her expression softening. "You did what you could, Elara. We all did. But we can't dwell on what's past. We have to keep moving forward."
Elara nodded, her resolve strengthening. "You're right. We can't stop now."
But as she spoke, Elara noticed a shadow of something darker in Lyra's expression—an edge that hadn't been there before. She hesitated before asking, "What is it, Lyra? What aren't you saying?"
Lyra's gaze hardened, and the disgust in her voice was palpable. "It's Kael," she said flatly. "Elara, he was with the Order. He's one of them. Do you know how many of our people died because of him? Because of the Orders like the ones he used to follow?"
Elara flinched at the bitterness in Lyra's words. "Lyra, it's not like that. Kael... he's different now. He saved me. He—"
"He's the reason so many of our friends are dead," Lyra cut in, her voice rising with anger. "I don't care what he's done for you. He's still one of them—a traitor to the kingdom, and to everything we stand for."
Elara felt a wave of guilt wash over her, but she couldn't let Lyra's words go unchallenged. "He's not the same person he was," she insisted, her voice trembling with the intensity of her emotions. "I know he's made mistakes—terrible ones—but he's trying to make up for them. He's risked everything to help us. Doesn't that count for something?"
Lyra's expression remained hard, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. "Elara, you're my friend. I trust you. But I can't ignore what Kael has done. You can't ignore it, either. Even Eldrin sees him as a threat. And honestly... I can't blame him."
Elara's heart clenched at the thought of Kael being seen as a threat, not just by the rebels, but by her closest friend. "I'm not ignoring it," she said quietly. "But I also see the man he's become. He's more than just a soldier from the Order. He's—"
She stopped herself, unsure of how to finish that sentence without revealing the depth of her feelings for Kael. But the look in Lyra's eyes told her that she had already said too much.
Lyra sighed, her expression softening slightly. "I just don't want to see you get hurt, Elara. You're going to be queen—you can't afford to let someone like Kael distract you from what needs to be done."
Elara shook her head, determination hardening her resolve. "Kael isn't a distraction. He's part of this, just like we are. And I'm going to make sure everyone sees that—including Eldrin."
Lyra studied her for a moment, then nodded, though the worry in her eyes didn't disappear. "Just... be careful, Elara. I know you want to believe in him, but don't let that belief blind you to the truth."
Elara nodded, understanding the warning in Lyra's words. "I'll be careful," she promised. "But I'm not giving up on him, Lyra. Not now, not ever."
