Two days before the planned takeover, Elara was more determined than ever. She had spent every waking moment focused on preparing herself for the role of queen, determined to prove that she could lead without Eldrin's influence. She wanted to show everyone—especially him—that she could be an excellent queen on her own terms. She spent hours in her quarters, surrounded by maps, documents, and books on governance and strategy. Her magic pulsed in the air around her, a constant reminder of the power she now wielded. As she studied, she absentmindedly played with small bursts of flame, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts and plans. The rebellion's fate rested on her shoulders, and she knew it. The pressure was immense, but she refused to let it break her. If anything, it only fueled her determination.
Kael, meanwhile, had noticed that Elara hadn't joined the others for dinner. Concerned, he made his way to her quarters with a tray of food. When he reached her door, he paused for a moment, listening to the quiet hum of magic on the other side. He knew she was deep in thought, probably pushing herself harder than she should. He knocked lightly before entering.
"Elara?" he called softly as he stepped inside.
Elara looked up from her work, her eyes tired but still burning with determination. "Kael," she said, surprised but pleased to see him. "What are you doing here?"
Kael held up the tray of food with a small smile. "I noticed you didn't come to dinner. Thought you might be hungry."
Elara glanced at the tray, realizing for the first time how long it had been since she last ate. She had been so focused on her preparations that she had completely lost track of time. "Oh... thank you," she said, her voice softening as she accepted the tray.
Kael set the tray down on the table beside her, his eyes lingering on the documents spread out in front of her. "You're working hard," he remarked, his tone laced with concern.
Elara nodded, taking a deep breath as she looked at the piles of work she had yet to finish. "I have to be ready, Kael. I have to prove that I can do this."
Kael watched her for a moment, admiring her determination but also worried about the toll it was taking on her. "Elara, you don't have to prove anything to anyone. You're already strong—you've already shown that you're capable. Don't push yourself too hard."
Elara met his gaze, her expression softening at his words. "It's not just about proving myself, Kael. I need to be the queen they deserve. I can't afford to make mistakes, not now."
Kael sighed, understanding her resolve but wishing she didn't have to carry such a heavy burden alone. "Just... don't forget to take care of yourself too," he said gently. "The rebellion needs you at your best. And that means staying healthy, both in body and mind."
Elara smiled, touched by his concern. "I'll try," she promised, picking up a piece of bread from the tray and taking a small bite. "Thank you, Kael. For everything."
Kael smiled back, a warm, genuine smile that made her heart skip a beat. "Anytime, Elara."
They lapsed into a comfortable silence as Elara continued to eat, Kael watching over her like a silent guardian. The tension between them was still there, the unspoken connection that had been growing stronger with each passing day. But for now, they were content to just be in each other's presence, drawing strength from the quiet companionship they shared.
As Elara finished her meal, she felt a renewed sense of resolve. She wasn't alone in this. She had Kael, and though she still had much to prove, she knew that she could face whatever challenges lay ahead with him by her side.
Kael noticed her energy shifting, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. He decided to help her relax further, lightening the mood with some playful banter. "You know," he began with a teasing smile, "you've been working so hard, I'm starting to wonder if you're trying to outdo me."
