The first light of dawn crept into the cave, casting long shadows over the stone walls as the fire that had warmed them through the night lay in cold ashes. Elara stirred, blinking groggily as she slowly woke from a fitful sleep. The events of the previous day were still fresh in her mind—the battle, the escape, and the intense moments she had shared with Kael.

She glanced over to where Kael was sitting, already awake, his back against the cave wall, lost in thought. His gaze was distant, as if he were still wrestling with the demons that had plagued him the night before. Elara sighed softly and sat up, stretching the stiffness from her limbs.

They couldn't stay here forever. They needed to find the rebels, rejoin the fight, and figure out what to do next. But as she looked at Kael, she could already sense that convincing him to leave the cave and return to the rebellion wasn't going to be easy.

"We need to go find the others," Elara said, her voice still soft from sleep but carrying a note of urgency. "We can't stay here."

Kael's eyes flickered toward her, his expression immediately guarded. "And why would we do that?" he asked, his tone flat. "It's safer here. The rebels are probably scattered, or worse. We'd be walking into danger."

Elara frowned, not entirely surprised by his response but frustrated all the same. "We can't just hide here forever, Kael. The rebellion needs us. I need to know if Lyra is okay, if anyone else made it out."

Kael's jaw tightened, his reluctance clear. "And what exactly do you think they'll do when they see me? I'm not exactly on their side, Elara. If they don't kill me on sight, they'll definitely throw me in a cell—or worse."

Elara rolled her eyes, already sensing the banter that was about to ensue. "You're with me now," she said firmly. "I'll vouch for you. They'll listen to me."

Kael snorted, clearly unconvinced. "You think a few nice words from you will change their minds? I'm a traitor to the Order, sure, but that doesn't automatically make me their friend."

Elara crossed her arms over her chest, her expression challenging. "Maybe not. But you saved my life—twice now. And that counts for something. Besides, I'm not letting you sit here and wallow in self-pity. We're going back, whether you like it or not."

Kael narrowed his eyes, the stubborn set of his jaw telling her he wasn't going to make this easy. "I'm not wallowing," he muttered defensively. "I'm being practical. There's a difference."

Elara huffed, exasperated but determined. "Kael, you're being stubborn. We need to do something. The Order isn't going to stop, and the rebels need every bit of help they can get. We're stronger together, and they need to know what happened—about Seraphine, about the attack. We can't keep that information to ourselves."

Kael stared at her for a long moment, clearly torn. The urge to protect her, to keep her safe from harm, warred with the knowledge that she was right—they couldn't stay hidden away while the world burned around them.

Finally, he sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "Fine," he said, the word sounding like it had been dragged out of him. "But if this goes sideways, don't say I didn't warn you."

Elara grinned, the tension easing slightly as she stood up and began to gather her things. "It won't," she assured him, though she couldn't entirely shake her own nervousness. "We'll figure it out. We have to."

Kael shook his head, still clearly reluctant but resigned to the fact that there was no changing her mind. "You're impossible, you know that?" he muttered as he rose to his feet, his movements stiff from the night spent on the hard cave floor.

Elara just smiled, her spirits lifting as she looked at him. "Maybe. But you're stuck with me now, so get used to it."

Kael grumbled something under his breath, but there was a faint hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Let's just get this over with," he said, his tone lightening slightly as he prepared himself for what was to
