Kael sat on a fallen log, the remnants of the hideout's emergency plans spread out before him. Using the information he had gathered, he carefully sketched a map, trying to piece together the most likely routes the rebels might have taken to regroup. His brow was furrowed in concentration, but his thoughts kept drifting back to the woman nearby.
Elara stood a short distance away, her focus on the small bursts of magic she was practicing. She conjured fire, molded water, and manipulated the air around her with a level of concentration that was impressive to watch. Every now and then, she would glance over at Kael, a mischievous smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
"You're pretty intense when you're in planning mode," Elara teased, letting a small orb of light float from her hand and hover in the air between them.
Kael glanced up, a smirk forming as he met her gaze. "And you're pretty distracting when you're showing off," he shot back, though his tone was light.
Elara chuckled, sending the orb of light spinning in a playful dance before she let it dissolve into the air. "Just trying to keep myself entertained. Can't have you doing all the hard work, after all."
Kael shook his head, amusement flickering in his eyes as he returned his attention to the map. But despite the light banter, a nagging worry gnawed at him. The rebels would not easily accept him into their ranks. He was, after all, a former soldier of the Magi Order—their enemy. The thought of facing their mistrust and anger made his chest tighten, but he knew there was no turning back. He had made his choice, and now he had to see it through.
As the sun began to set, the shadows lengthened, and the air grew cooler. The time to make camp had come, and Elara used her magic to start a fire. The flames sprung to life with a mere flick of her wrist, casting a warm glow that pushed back the encroaching darkness. Kael stood and stretched, his muscles stiff from sitting for so long.
"I'll find some food and water," he said, nodding toward the trees. "Stay here and keep the fire going."
Elara nodded, her eyes following him as he disappeared into the forest. She watched the flames for a while, letting the crackling of the fire soothe her nerves. But as the minutes ticked by, a strange sensation began to creep over her. It felt as if someone—or something—was watching her from the shadows.
Her instincts went on high alert, and she stood, peering into the darkness beyond the firelight. "Kael?" she called out, her voice wavering slightly. But there was no answer, only the rustle of leaves in the breeze.
She took a few cautious steps away from the fire, scanning the trees for any sign of movement. The feeling of being watched grew stronger, and her heart began to race. Just as she was about to call out again, she was suddenly tackled from the side, the force of the impact knocking her to the ground.
Elara gasped, struggling to catch her breath as she tried to make sense of what was happening. A man loomed over her, his dark armor identifying him as one of the Order's soldiers. His eyes were cold and merciless as he pinned her down, his hand going to the hilt of his sword.
Panic surged through her, and she screamed, lashing out with her magic in a desperate attempt to defend herself. A burst of energy exploded from her hands, but the soldier was quick, dodging her attack and delivering a brutal backhand that left her dazed.
Elara's vision blurred as she fought to stay conscious, her body screaming in pain. The soldier's weight pressed down on her, and she could feel the cold steel of his sword against her throat. She struggled, kicking and thrashing, but the soldier was too strong, too focused.
Just as her strength was fading, she heard a roar in the distance—a sound filled with rage and desperation. Kael.
In an instant, Kael was upon them, his sword flashing in the firelight as he barreled into the soldier, knocking him off Elara with a powerful strike. The force of the blow sent the soldier sprawling, and Kael followed up with a flurry of attacks, his movements precise and deadly.
