I walked through the doors of the backstage working area. My body present, but my mind? Far from it. In fact, I felt like I was about to faint, pass away and never get up. Perhaps that's what I should've done all along— end myself before the world ended me itself.
The plan was to head over to Salacia's changing room and walk straight in without knocking, as per Renesmee's instructions before the start of the circus show. But Roxanne's talk suddenly had me noticing all the free access Renesmee had been giving me. Free passes that even her girlfriend had never tasted.
The apartment, the motorbike, everything. It sank in. I had been having this special treatment and looking at it now from outside in felt different. It felt strangely questionable.
Why was Renesmee treating me this way? Could she possibly have . . . feelings for me? My heart skipped a beat at the idea.
The pendant she never took off. The kindness and extra gentleness in the way she treated me. The way she pulled off the I'm-eternally-pissed-at-the-world attitude so swiftly, only to let it crumble at my presence. And then there was that kiss. That ghostlike kiss that felt like I had made it up in my head. So unrighteous, so chaste. I couldn't get it out of my head. As much as I tried to, I miserably failed. And I couldn't stop pondering why she did that. But again, we kissed once to seal a promise. This was no different, right? But . . . did friends kiss each other like this? Dif friends lure each other into deserted hallways just to share secret kisses? Did friends bask in each other's embrace in the bathtub? Was this what friends usually did, how friendship usually felt? Did friends yearn for one another's lips? Because I so did. Did she feel the same?
I shook my head profusely, as if I could somehow physically shake Renesmee out of my system. My feet resumed their movements, only to stop at the shocking sight before me.
Lady Esmeralda exchanging money for a transparent beige sack of god knows what with – Jasper?
Jasper. It was really him.
Goodamn Jasper.
"The pleasure's all mine." Lady Esmeralda thanked the guy before he turned around to leave.
Then he stopped, noticing me. It took him less than a second to recognize me and while I expected his pupils to dilate in panic, the side of his lips twitched upwards in delight.
"You little prick," He chuckled, my glare hard on him. "Nice to see you too again, really."
Before I could scoff, Lady Esmeralda got up from her seat.
"You two know each other?" The woman was visibly perplexed.
How was she affiliated with this awful dude? They sure didn't look like they could be in the same room whatsoever.
