"Hey, what would you do with your life if you didn't have to be this?" a voice asked in a whisper. A young girl turned her head to face the one who asked her that, a look of confusion etched on her face. With a sigh, the other child repeated the question. "If we didn't have to be here, if we could do anything else, what would you want to do?"
The nameless girl's face scrunched up, and momentarily, she contemplated those words. But ultimately, the girl scoffed, "Who the hell knows things like that? There's no point thinking about hypotheticals."
"Come on, don't be so boring. Entertain me a little."
"Tch, do you think the rest of us are here just to dance to your whims?" Asked the nameless girl, though she didn't need to wait for an answer. The coy grin on her peer's face was as good a confession as anything. "I don't care. I won't waste time on a question you came up with on a whim."
"Oh, please. I'm going to be nine in a few months." The girl replied as she picked at the bandages on her arm. "I've had plenty of time to think. My brother says I'm the cutest person in the world, so maybe I'd become an actress or a singer. I don't mind so long as many people admire me."
"You're attention-starved." The girl replied with a huff.
"Guilty as charged." A saccharine giggle that infuriated the nameless girl filled the air. This facade of joy on her face was painful even to witness.
Nevertheless, an actor was it? "You strike me more as a heartless CEO with a bunch of employees you'd exploit."
Hearing that, the girl placed her hand on her chin, looking upwards as if searching for something, and pondered. She hummed lowly as a sadistic smile appeared briefly before fading away. "Yeah, I see that too. I'm sure an actor has enough free time to run a company, so why not do both?"
"You're an idiot."
"And you're a buzzkill."
Faint screams echoed in the background, not allowing any silence to fall over the two children. The only thing that broke up the noise was the cracking of stone and the sound of limp flesh crashing down to the floor. 'They're still going? How many times are they going to test that girl's quirk? At rate, they'll run out of inmates to feed to Death.'
But the girl beside her didn't seem to mind; she was far too used to things like this now. It didn't phase her at all; even if the one the testing was someone close to her, she showed no weakness. Another facade.
Over those screams and amongst the scent of flowers, she spoke again. "There's nothing wrong with dreaming. It's one of the only things we can do. Dreams... they can't be taken away." Those words fell with the weight of countless lessons learned. "So, how about you? You don't seem too imaginative, so I guess we should start with something smaller. Oh, how about you finally getting a name?"
The nameless girl scoffed. "I have a designation, you know that."
"Uh-huh. I may not know too much about foreign cultures, but I'm pretty sure names tend not to have numbers in them." The girl scolded, waving her finger in the face of her peer. "Come on, even if we can't call you it in front of them, you should also have a name. After all, not too many of us are still here."
"Wha-" before she could finish, she was interrupted.
"No excuses; I'll force you to use my quirk if I have to." Chains roiled behind that slight smile, both threatening and comforting in kind. "So I'll ask you if you could have any name; if you could be anybody, who would you be? Don't make me pick for you."
