Chapter Four: Unlikely Allies
Aria trudged through the woods behind Deadpool, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and concern. The mercenary’s sudden appearance and the way he had intercepted her left her with more questions than answers. Yet, despite everything, she couldn’t help but feel a strange sense of camaraderie with him.
Deadpool glanced back at her occasionally, his face hidden behind his mask but his eyes full of a mix of amusement and caution. He moved with surprising agility, ducking and weaving through the dense forest undergrowth.
“So,” Deadpool said suddenly, breaking the silence with his trademark irreverence, “you come here often, or is this your first time in the woods of doom?”
Aria raised an eyebrow. “Seriously? We’re hiding from the Avengers, and you’re making jokes?”
Deadpool spun around dramatically, striking a pose with his arms outstretched. “Oh, come on! The Avengers? I’ve faced them before. They’re like really enthusiastic neighborhood watch volunteers with superpowers.”
Aria shook her head, unable to suppress a small smile. “You’re unbelievable.”
“I’ve heard that before,” Deadpool replied with a wink, then turned back to lead the way. “But hey, I like to think of it as a compliment. If you don’t have a sense of humor when you’re being hunted, you’re just going to end up a very grumpy and probably dead person.”
Aria chuckled despite herself. “You’re something else, you know that?”
“Ah, thank you!” Deadpool said with mock seriousness. “I do try. It’s all part of the charm.”
As they continued, Deadpool’s voice took on a more contemplative tone. “So, what’s your deal, kid? You’re not exactly the type to wander into the woods without a good reason. Family drama? Or just a craving for adventure?”
Aria hesitated before answering. “A bit of both, I guess. I wanted to make sure you were okay after… well, after everything that happened.”
Deadpool’s eyes softened slightly, though his mask made it hard to tell for sure. “You’re a brave one, I’ll give you that. Not many people would risk running into the Avengers just to check on me.”
“Brave or stupid,” Aria said with a smirk. “Sometimes, it’s hard to tell the difference.”
Deadpool laughed, a sound that was both harsh and oddly endearing. “Ah, a kindred spirit! You’re definitely a refreshing change from the usual. Most people just run away screaming when they see me.”
“You’re not exactly the easiest person to deal with,” Aria said, glancing at him. “Not that I’m complaining.”
“Fair point,” Deadpool conceded. “But hey, I’ve got my charms. Just ask the fourth wall.”
Aria frowned in confusion. “Fourth wall? Who are you talking to?”
Deadpool stopped in his tracks, turning to look directly at Aria with exaggerated seriousness. “Oh, you didn’t know? I’m sort of famous for talking to the audience. You know, breaking the fourth wall? It’s a thing in my world. Makes life a lot more interesting.”
Aria stared at him, bewildered. “You’re talking to—what, exactly? Are you saying you think we’re in a story or something?”
Deadpool shrugged, his mask crinkling with the gesture. “You’d be surprised. But let’s focus on staying alive for now, okay? The fourth wall can wait.”
“Right,” Aria said, trying to process what he had just said. “So, where are we going? I mean, what’s the plan here?”
Deadpool resumed walking, his movements more relaxed now. “The plan is to stay out of sight, find a safe place to lay low, and hopefully not get caught by your very diligent friends. If they spot us, it’s game over.”
Aria followed, feeling a strange mixture of excitement and unease. “And after that?”
“After that,” Deadpool said with a dramatic flourish, “we figure out how to get me out of this mess. I’m thinking of a grand escape involving a trampoline and a helicopter, but that’s more of a dream scenario.”
Aria laughed despite herself. “You really have no filter, do you?”
Deadpool grinned. “What can I say? It’s part of the charm. Plus, it keeps things interesting.”
As they moved through the forest, Aria couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of camaraderie with Deadpool. His jokes and sarcasm, though often outrageous, were oddly comforting. He was a stark contrast to the serious and composed Avengers, and his irreverence was a breath of fresh air.
After what felt like hours of walking, Deadpool finally stopped in a small clearing. “This should be a decent spot to catch our breath,” he said, setting down his gear and stretching. “Not exactly a luxury suite, but it’ll do.”
Aria sat down on a fallen log, her legs aching from the hike. “I’m surprised you’re not more worried about the Avengers finding us.”
Deadpool pulled out a snack from his bag and began munching on it. “Worried? Nah. They’re good, but they’re not that good. Plus, they’re probably still thinking I’m a few miles away by now. The element of surprise is on our side.”
Aria looked around the clearing, taking in the serenity of the place. “It’s kind of nice out here, actually. Quiet.”
Deadpool glanced at her, his expression thoughtful. “Yeah, it is. Sometimes, it’s nice to get away from all the noise and chaos, even if it’s just for a little while.”
Aria nodded, appreciating the moment of calm. Despite the danger they were in, being out here with Deadpool felt oddly peaceful. She glanced at him, wondering what other surprises he had in store.
“So,” she said, breaking the silence, “what’s your deal? Why are you running from the Avengers?”
Deadpool shrugged, his mask hiding his expression. “Let’s just say I’ve had some disagreements with their policies. We don’t exactly see eye to eye on certain… ethical issues.”
“Like what?” Aria asked, curiosity getting the better of her.
Deadpool smirked. “Like, for example, their tendency to make my life difficult. But let’s save the deep philosophical discussions for later. Right now, we need to focus on staying one step ahead of your parents.”
Aria smiled, feeling a newfound respect for the mercenary. Despite his eccentricities, he was surprisingly perceptive and had a sense of humor that made the situation more bearable.
As they settled into their temporary hideout, Aria couldn’t shake the feeling that this unlikely alliance was just the beginning of something much bigger. Whatever happened next, she knew one thing for sure—life with Deadpool was never going to be dull.
