Chapter Twelve: A Day of Freedom
Aria woke up the next morning feeling a renewed sense of freedom. Her conversation with Tony the night before had given her hope that things might be changing for the better. Determined to make the most of her newfound space, she decided to skip school and spend the day away from the compound.
With a plan in mind, Aria slipped out of the house early, her heart racing with the thrill of freedom. She made her way to the hidden warehouse where she had met Deadpool and hoped to catch up with him. As she arrived, she noticed the place was quieter than usual.
Pushing the door open, she stepped inside and was greeted by the familiar, slightly disheveled interior. However, Deadpool was nowhere to be seen. Instead, Wolverine was lounging on a worn-out couch, flipping through a comic book.
“Hey, Logan,” Aria called out, a bit surprised to see him there. “Is Deadpool around?”
Wolverine looked up from his comic book with a bemused smile. “Nah, he’s not here. Took off on one of his wild adventures. But I’m around if you need some company.”
Aria’s face fell slightly, but she quickly recovered. “Oh, okay. I guess I’ll hang out with you then.”
Wolverine stretched, setting the comic book aside. “Well, you’re in luck. I’ve got plenty of time and some decent stories. Plus, Deadpool’s absence means I’ve got a break from his annoying antics.”
As they settled into conversation, Wolverine’s demeanor was surprisingly engaging. He tried to lighten the mood with a mix of casual humor and flirtatious comments, though they were delivered in his gruff style.
“So, Aria,” Wolverine began, leaning back with a grin, “what’s a smart, independent girl like you doing here instead of in school? Playing hooky, I see?”
Aria chuckled, finding his attempts at flirting endearing rather than off-putting. “Yeah, you could say that. I needed a break from everything. School and the compound were starting to feel a bit stifling.”
Wolverine raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk on his lips. “Well, I can’t blame you for that. Sometimes you’ve got to escape the mundane. And hey, if you’re looking for excitement, I’m sure I can come up with a few stories that’ll beat any textbook.”
Aria laughed, genuinely enjoying his company. “I’m sure you can. So, what’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever done?”
Wolverine leaned in, lowering his voice conspiratorially. “Well, there was that one time I got into a bar brawl with a bunch of mutants who thought they were tougher than me. Spoiler alert: they weren’t.”
Aria’s eyes widened with interest. “That sounds like quite the story.”
“Oh, it was. And let’s just say, I may have broken a few tables and egos along the way,” Wolverine said with a mischievous glint in his eye. “But I came out on top, as always.”
Aria found herself laughing and relaxing more than she had in a long time. Wolverine’s rough charm and humorous stories were a refreshing change from the tension she had been dealing with. Despite his gruff exterior, there was something genuinely endearing about his attempts at flirting and his ability to make her smile.
“Thanks for hanging out with me, Logan,” Aria said as the conversation continued. “I didn’t expect to have such a fun day.”
Wolverine shrugged nonchalantly, though his grin was unmistakable. “Anytime. Just remember, next time Deadpool’s around, you’ll have to put up with his bad jokes and weird antics.”
Aria grinned, shaking her head. “I’ll keep that in mind. But for now, I’m just glad to have a break from everything.”
As the hours passed, Aria and Wolverine continued to chat and joke around, enjoying the unexpected companionship. Wolverine’s playful banter and amusing stories made the day feel like a much-needed escape from her usual routine.
Eventually, Aria knew it was time to head back before anyone noticed she was gone. She thanked Wolverine for the company, and he gave her a nod of farewell.
“Don’t be a stranger, Aria,” he called after her with a smirk. “And if you ever need more stories or someone to help you break out of trouble, you know where to find me.”
Aria smiled, feeling lighter and more relaxed than she had in weeks. As she made her way back to the compound, she reflected on the day’s unexpected turn of events. Despite the challenges she faced, she was learning to find moments of joy and connection in the most unexpected places.
