ALEX LAY ON THE SPARE room's bed, staring up at the ceiling. He'd been tired before he tried to sleep, but now he was wide awake, unable to. His mind was a whirlwind, replaying the moment with Evelyn over and over. The kiss had been everything he'd imagined and more, but now, in the quiet of the night, doubts and questions crept in.
He couldn't think straight. His thoughts were tangled, a mess of emotions and what-ifs. He'd kissed Evelyn. Well, she'd kissed him. Evelyn, his childhood friend, the girl he'd loved for so long. And he had kissed her back. It felt like a dream, but the lingering taste of her lips on his told him it was real.
After the kiss, they'd watched some TV, trying to act normal, as if nothing happened between them. Eventually, they'd said goodnight, and Alex had headed upstairs to the spare room, his heart pounding in his chest.
Now, lying in the dark, he wasn't sure how he'd act around her in the morning. Probably like normal, he thought, but he hoped it wouldn't just be moving around in awkward silence. He wanted to talk to her, to understand what this meant for them. But the fear of ruining everything held him back.
"What the fuck were you thinking?" He asked himself with a sigh, rolling onto his side and pulling the duvet up further to his chin.
The house was silent, save for the occasional creak of the floorboards and the distant hum of the air con. He wondered if Evelyn was lying awake too, thinking about the kiss, about him.
Alex closed his eyes, willing himself to sleep, but his mind kept drifting back to Evelyn, to the feel of her lips on his, to the hope that perhaps this could be the start of something beautiful.
EVELYN LAY IN HER BED, fingers picking anxiously at the skin around her nails. She couldn't believe what had just happened. She had kissed Alex. She had been the one to make the first move, and it had taken her completely by surprise.
Monaco's beautiful, she had commented earlier, her head resting on Alex's shoulder as they sat on the sand. It had felt so natural, so right, to be close to him. She had always seen Alex as her best friend, the boy she grew up with, but recently he'd become more.
When she texted him to meet at the beach, she hadn't expected anything more than a casual hangout. But the moment he arrived, looking slightly disheveled yet undeniably handsome, her heart had skipped a beat. They had talked, laughed, and had a mini water fight, and then, surprising herself, she kissed him almost as soon as they got home.
She turned onto her side, hugging her pillow tightly, trying to process what had just happened. The way his lips felt against hers, the warmth of his embrace, the unspoken feelings that had finally surfaced—it was all so overwhelming.
Why did I kiss him? she wondered, her mind racing. She had always been the cautious one, the one who overthought everything. But in that moment, something inside her had snapped, and she had acted on impulse. And now, she was left to deal with the aftermath.
She sighed, feeling a mix of excitement and fear. She didn't want things to be awkward between them in the morning. She wanted to talk to him, to understand what he was feeling, but she was also scared of what he might say. What if he regretted it? What if he didn't feel the same way she did?
That was all bullshit, and she knew it.
