Under Observation

The bell rings once again, and I step into my Avanced Mathematics Classroom. Being the first in the room. I'm a little excited for today's lesson with Topology. I enjoy challenging myself, and even if I've completed this particular session in one of my college courses a few years ago, it never stops my excitement to have refreshers. I love numbers and equations because they can't change. I can trust what I see and solve complex equations.

Learning is so fun. It's much better than being whipped with cords and getting beaten with random heavy objects. Numbers can't hurt me the way people can. Numbers can't betray me. I learned my numbers before i knew how to spell, since mothers used to frequently count each of my lashings as they gave them to me as a child. back when my blood only dripped to the floor instead of poured.

I'm brought out of my thoughts as Kota walks through the classroom door. His eyes immediately zoning in on me as he beelines to the open seat beside mine. I would be frustrated that they've decided to be like guard dogs to me, but honestly, their presence doesn't seem too much like I thought it would. Plus, I know that in this class, at least, Kota won't try talking information out of me. Since he, too, enjoys this class.

So, I relax my tensed shoulders and wait for the teacher to begin explaining equations as they write on the whiteboard at the front of the class in a dark purple expo marker. Then, for the rest of the class, me and Kota are excitedly scrawling notes into our books. Making sure to soak in all the information. So that by the end of the lecture, we both hurriedly write out solutions to the pop test that had been passed out to us. Both of us finishing at round the first time.

Then the bell rings, and I'm rushing from the room to go to Mr. Toma's class, Advanced Biology.

                            ×_×

"Phosphorescence, Bioluminescence, and Fluorescence are all forms of Luminescence. This is because they all emit light without producing heat. But they each have their differences. Here in a few minutes, I want you all to read the next two pages of the chapter, then write a brief summary of what these differences are. Then, we can move on to the evolution process and its own possibilities." Mr. Toma picks up a stack of papers and begins passing them out at each desk, still speaking as he does.

"Evolution has many branches we can explore, and I do plan on letting each of us do group projects soon. There's plenty of routes for this. We just happened to start with bioluminescence first. To get a better understanding of such a broad topic. But in reality, there is more than that. We also have genetics, comparative anatomy, fossil records, variation evolution, inheritance, selection, and even time evolution."

I straightened my spine at his speech. Interest in being allowed to explore the subject more deeply, causing me to perk up. Enough to feign ignorance on the group project bit. I'm not willing to let knowing that I'll definitely be paired with the Taylor brothers to get in the way of my excitement. Besides, I'm sure being paired with them two academy boys would be much better than being stuck with anyone else in the classroom. Since most of the students look bored or irritated to be here in the first place. That kind of attitude would definitely put a downer to my mood.

I looked down at the sheet that was placed onto my desk. It's a simple worksheet that has filled in the blank spaces that match the book passages. To gently enforce the students to actually retain at least a little bit of what they're reading. Of course, I take it as an insult. I very much plan on reading anyway.

But I ignore the feeling and instead decide to fill out the blanks without opening the book to give myself a better challenge. Which is easier than it seems since it's mostly what I already know.

After finishing the sheet, I pull out the book and a blank piece of notebook paper and begin writing out my summery. Then, when I look up and see that nobody has finished, I decide to take out another blank page and start writing on the different evolution branches, then on branches within those branches. I'm having so much fun and so absorbed into my own work that I yelp a little when the bell startles me from my zone.
