The night sky always fascinated Dunk. It became a habit for him to gaze at the heavens for hours.
"Are you still staring at the night sky?" Phuwin asked. "I don't understand what you find in looking at the same sky and the same star every night."
"You're wrong," Dunk replied. "The sky changes every minute. Its color shifts each time you look at it. It's never the same. Don't you find the sky magical? It's like a magic people believe doesn't exist. The stars scattered like moon dust seem like a magical spell that could transport you to a world where all your wishes might come true-a world that could erase your pain and give you a fresh start."
"You and your dreams. There's no magic or other world. We have a tough life; we should focus on making this one better. It's cold-let's hurry inside," Phuwin muttered and went inside.
Dunk followed him, heading to bed for another sleepless night, haunted by memories.
As dawn's light seeped into his room through the large glass window, Dunk got up and began his morning routine. He hurried downstairs to make breakfast, though he usually skipped it. He set the table for Phuwin and then left for the university.
While waiting for the bus, he realized he was running low on money. He couldn't ask his parents-they'd just scold him. Skipping lunch at the cafeteria was inevitable unless he found a part-time job quickly.
Rushing to his classroom, Dunk accidentally bumped into someone and fell. A gentle, warm hand rested on his shoulder. Looking up, Dunk saw a face that resembled his own.
The boy helped Dunk up and introduced himself. "Hi! I'm Pond. I'm new here. Sorry I didn't see you. Are you okay?"
Dunk stared at the familiar face, lost in thought. Pond interrupted, "You look familiar. I think I've seen you before. Wait, your face reminds me of my childhood friend-those lovely eyes, lips, and a face too beautiful as well as handsome for a boy. Are you Dunk?"
Dunk, trembling with fear, shook his head and ran away.
Pond, puzzled, mentioned the incident to his friend Prince. "I just bumped into this boy. I apologized and asked if I knew him, but he ran away without saying anything. Did I do something wrong?"
"You did nothing wrong, Pond. He's just a weirdo. Forget about him. It's your first day; let me introduce you to my friends." Prince led Pond away.
"No, it can't be true. He can't be here. He can't recognize me or know me. He would surely hate me or be disgusted by me. I can't lose my only friend-my only happy memory. I can't bear for it to fade away," Dunk thought as he ran back to his condo as fast as he could.
Pond was Dunk's first-and only-friend. Dunk locked himself in his room and lay on his bed, drifting into thoughts of the past where all his pain and suffering began. Phuwin, just waking up, was puzzled by Dunk's behavior. He had never understood his cousin, who remained oddly introverted and distant. Despite Phuwin's efforts to connect, Dunk had always seemed lost in his own world.
