Present
I couldn't believe Phuwin was crying more than I was while listening to my past.
Isn't this what I prayed for on that miserable night, finding comfort on the cold floor as I hoped for someone who would genuinely care? Now here I am, surrounded by the warmth of two people who are more devastated by my pain than I am.
"That's how you got those scars," Phuwin said, pointing to my hands.
"I'm sorry if you're disappointed in me," I said. "I don't want you to think I'm a coward or a loser."
"You're braver than us," Phuwin replied. "You survived all that and still manage to smile. I don't know if I could handle what you went through."
"Who was that boy?" Pond asked. "Did you ever see him again?"
"No, I never saw his face," I said. "But I remember his eyes. At the time I was too messed up to search for him properly, and by the time I came to my senses, I didn't know where to look. I've always searched for those eyes but never found them again."
Dunk changed the subject. "Let's stop talking about the past. How's the trip planning going? Are you guys done packing?"
"We weren't going anywhere," Phuwin said. "Not after hearing all this. I don't want to leave you."
Phuwin hugged me tightly.
"Hey, I'm not a kid," I reassured them. "I can take care of myself. You guys should enjoy your vacation."
"Then let's go together," Phuwin suggested eagerly.
"No way," Dunk said with a wink. "I'm glad I turned you down before. I don't want to be your third wheel on your honeymoon."
"Shut up!" Phuwin said, giving him a playful kick.
Pond laughed at their banter.
At the airport
"I'm going to miss you. You should have come with us," Phuwin said sadly.
"I'm not going anywhere," Dunk said teasingly. "You'll just find me here. I was actually looking forward to a break from you two."
We said our goodbyes, and I realized I needed to find a part-time job soon-I was really running low on money.
"Dunk, you really need to work. Let's find something," I said to myself.
After Pond and Phuwin left, I was left alone with my thoughts. The house felt unusually quiet. I wandered through the rooms, trying to shake off the lingering sadness from the farewell. I needed to take action, not just for financial reasons but to regain a sense of purpose.I pulled out my laptop and began searching for part-time job opportunities. I found a few promising listings: a barista position at a local café, a receptionist job at a nearby gym, and some freelance gigs online. Each option had its own appeal, but I was unsure which would be the best fit.
My phone buzzed with a message from Phuwin. "Hey, just checking in. How are you holding up?"
I smiled at the thoughtful gesture and replied, "I'm okay. Just busy looking for a job. Thanks for checking in."
A few moments later, my phone rang. It was Pond. "Hey, I heard you're job hunting. I know a few people who might be able to help. Want me to make some calls for you?"
