Chapter 17: The Reckoning

Detective Mercer returned to Victor Collins' apartment with fresh evidence from the woods. He hoped this would provide the breakthrough needed to unravel the mystery of Emily Brooks’ death. Collins answered the door, his expression tense as he saw Mercer’s determined demeanor.

“Detective Mercer,” Collins greeted, clearly anxious. “What’s going on?”

“I found something important,” Mercer said, holding up a folder with photographs of the symbols and the altar from the woods. “These symbols were found on an altar deep in the forest. They match the ones Emily was researching and were also found on her body.”

Collins’ face went pale as he examined the photos. “I see. What are you implying?”

“Your involvement in occult rituals and the recent use of these symbols points to a connection with Emily’s death,” Mercer stated firmly. “I need to know what you’re hiding. Were you involved in any rituals with Emily?”

Collins hesitated, his eyes darting around the room. “I wasn’t involved in any rituals with Emily. I helped her with her research, but I didn’t perform any rituals myself.”

“Then explain the footprints and ritualistic items found at the altar,” Mercer pressed. “Someone has been using these symbols recently. Were you aware of this?”

Collins looked defeated. “I can’t explain the recent activities. I’ve only been researching the occult, not practicing it. But I do know someone who might have the answers you’re looking for.”

“Who?” Mercer asked, his interest piqued.

“Professor Harris,” Collins said, his voice trembling. “He’s deeply involved in these practices. He might be able to provide more information about what’s been happening.”

Mercer’s mind raced. Professor Harris had been a key figure in the investigation, and now he was emerging as a potential suspect. With this new lead, Mercer prepared to confront Harris, hoping to uncover the final pieces of the puzzle and bring clarity to Emily’s tragic death.
