Chapter 20: The Unmasking

Detective Mercer took a seat in Michael Reed’s modest office, the tension palpable. Reed, a man in his early thirties, looked more nervous than confident. Mercer wasted no time.

“Mr. Reed,” Mercer began, “I need to ask you about your interest in Emily Brooks and your background in occult studies. You’ve had access to areas of the school and recent activities that concern me.”

Reed shifted uncomfortably in his chair. “I don’t see how this relates to me. I’ve only been here a few months and haven’t had any direct contact with Emily.”

Mercer leaned forward. “I’ve found that you have a background in anthropology with a focus on ancient rituals. Emily was deeply involved in studying occult practices and was scared for her life. Her research included symbols connected to dark rituals—symbols that you’ve had access to.”

Reed’s face went pale. “I—I was just hired for security. I didn’t mean to get involved in any of this.”

“Your background and access to the school make you a person of interest,” Mercer pressed. “I need to know if you were aware of Emily’s research or if you’ve been involved in any occult practices yourself.”

Reed’s composure cracked. “I knew about her research. I was curious, but I never participated in any rituals. I only read about them.”

“Then explain the footprints and ritualistic items found in the woods,” Mercer demanded. “And why did Emily’s journal list you as someone she was concerned about?”

Reed’s facade finally broke. “I admit I was curious about the rituals, but I never harmed Emily. I believe someone else might have used my research to mislead or intimidate her. I didn’t want to be involved, but I might have been used as a pawn.”

Mercer’s mind raced. Reed’s confession hinted at a more complex scheme. Someone had manipulated Reed’s interest for darker purposes. The investigation was far from over, and Mercer knew he had to dig deeper to uncover the true mastermind behind Emily’s murder.
