Detective Mercer was deep into researching the occult symbols Emily had been studying when he received a call from Officer Barnes. “Detective Mercer, we’ve found something interesting,” Barnes said. “A former student of the school, who’s now a part-time librarian at a local university, contacted us. She says she has information about the symbols Emily was interested in.”
Mercer’s interest was piqued. “What’s her name and where can I find her?”
“Her name is Fiona Green,” Barnes replied. “She’s at the university library. I suggest you visit her as soon as possible.”
Mercer made his way to the university library, where he found Fiona Green surrounded by stacks of books. She was in her mid-twenties, with a serious expression that suggested she was used to dealing with academic matters.
“Ms. Green?” Mercer introduced himself. “I understand you have information regarding the symbols Emily Brooks was researching.”
Fiona nodded, her expression tense. “Yes, I was a student here when Emily was researching those symbols. I noticed she borrowed several books from our collection on occult practices and rituals.”
“Can you tell me more about these books?” Mercer asked.
Fiona pulled out a list from her desk. “Emily was particularly interested in works by a local author who writes about ancient rituals. One of the books she borrowed was about the history of occult practices in this region. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now I realize she might have been onto something important.”
Mercer reviewed the list and noted the names of the books. “Do you remember if Emily mentioned anyone else who might have been interested in these topics?”
Fiona hesitated. “Not specifically, but she seemed worried about someone following her. She mentioned wanting to keep her research private.”
With this new information, Mercer felt a renewed sense of direction. The connection between Emily’s research and the local author could be crucial. He thanked Fiona and left the library, ready to delve into the books and explore the potential link between Emily’s death and the occult practices she had been studying.
