The school day ended, and Ravenwood High fell into an uneasy silence. Detective Mercer stood by his car, the weight of the investigation heavy on his mind. He needed to talk to Emily’s friends to gather more information.
Mercer approached a small group of students by the front entrance. “Excuse me,” he said, showing his badge. “I need to speak with Sarah, Lisa, and Ben about Emily Brooks.”
Sarah, her eyes red, stepped forward. “I’m Sarah. This is Lisa and Ben.”
Mercer asked them about Emily’s recent behavior. “She seemed distracted lately,” Lisa said. “She was fine during lunch yesterday, but acted strange after that.”
“Did she mention anything unusual?” Mercer asked.
Ben spoke up, “She looked nervous in Mr. Cain’s class, kept glancing at the window. When I asked her about it, she said it was nothing.”
“Was there anyone who might have wanted to hurt her?” Mercer inquired.
Sarah said, “Kyle, a senior, was spreading nasty rumors about her. He asked her out, she refused, and he didn’t take it well.”
“Where can I find Kyle?” Mercer asked.
“He usually hangs out by the gym,” Lisa said.
Mercer thanked them and went to the gym. There, he found Kyle, who looked wary as Mercer approached. “I need to ask you about Emily,” Mercer said. Kyle’s defensive attitude didn’t help his case.
“I didn’t do anything to her,” Kyle insisted, but Mercer noted his agitation.
As Mercer left, he saw Mr. Cain watching him from a distance. The teacher’s uneasy demeanor was a new concern. With more questions than answers, Mercer knew the investigation was just beginning.
