Chapter 12: The Local Author

Detective Mercer returned to his office and immediately started researching the local author Fiona Green had mentioned. The author, Thomas Blackwood, was known for his works on ancient rituals and occult practices. His books were widely circulated in academic circles, and Mercer found several references to him in the university library’s database.

One of Blackwood’s books, Rituals of the Forgotten, was listed as a key text in Emily’s research. Mercer decided to visit Blackwood’s residence, hoping to gain insight into his work and any possible connections to Emily.

Blackwood’s house was an old Victorian on the edge of town, filled with dark, Gothic decor. Mercer knocked on the door, and after a moment, a middle-aged man with an intense gaze answered.

“Mr. Blackwood?” Mercer said, showing his badge. “I’m Detective Mercer. I’m investigating the death of Emily Brooks and need to speak with you about your work.”

Blackwood’s eyes narrowed. “Emily Brooks? I remember her. She was very interested in my work. What’s this about?”

“I understand she borrowed some of your books,” Mercer began. “Did she mention why she was interested or if she was in any kind of trouble?”

Blackwood’s expression grew serious. “She was researching the darker aspects of my work, which is unusual. Most readers are interested in the historical aspects. Emily seemed obsessed and was particularly focused on the more disturbing rituals.”

“Did she say who else might be interested in this research?” Mercer asked.

Blackwood shook his head. “No, she didn’t. But I warned her that delving into these topics could be dangerous. It seems she took that warning seriously.”

With this new insight, Mercer felt a crucial piece of the puzzle fall into place. Emily’s obsession with Blackwood’s work and his warning about its dangers might be connected to the threats she faced. He needed to explore further into the darker side of Blackwood’s research to uncover the truth behind Emily’s death.
