"Uh-huh, yeah of course," Jacob looked up at me as I nodded to the person on the phone. His hands rubbed lazy patterns on my hips. "No worries, this was an important call." I glared at Jacob.

Stay focused. My professional reputation was on the line.

The call quickly ended, and I leaned my forehead against Jacob's shoulder, the mood gone. Pushing myself off, I got up, walked over to the dining table, and opened my computer.

Jacob eyed me from his spot in the living room.

"What are you doing?" He asked.

"My job." The call was short and quick but the contents of it were enough to tell me that I needed to do something now. "I'm sorry, J."

He shook his head before heading into the bedroom, the sound of the shower quietly filling the space before the door shut.

My fingers worked quickly as I typed away on the computer. There were some last-minute changes to the contract which will require Astrid and I to relook over the digital contract they sent over with a lawyer.

Saving the Ironclad locked document, I send it over to the lawyer, and text Astrid as a heads-up that we'll be meeting tomorrow. Since I'm already sitting here at my computer I might as well do some more work, and give myself some moving room for tomorrow.

Scrolling through my Emails I see Killian's assistant's name.  The contents of the Email are lunch reservations.

I'd be free tomorrow in the afternoon.

It's been a week since then but the fact that Killian still followed through was the thought that counts. I looked over the Email and made sure everything wasn't out of place, adding it to my calendar, before replying that Astrid and I would be delighted to join.

Jacob comes out from the bedroom in not pajamas but going-out clothes. My brows furrow inward as scan him from head to toe.

"Going somewhere?" I asked checking the time. It was 10 p.m.

He ran a hand through his hair before stopping at the door and grabbing his keys. "I'm going out with the boys." He slid his shoes on. "I'll be home later." The door shut before I could say a word.

What the fuck?

Is he actually serious...?

I know the call killed the mood but for him to up and leave like that— kind of hurts.

Grabbing my phone again I message Astrid about the lunch with Killian, grabbing a drink from the kitchen for myself.

The red liquid pours into the glass cup swirling around until I stop the bottle. My fingers wrapped around the stem of the glass as I walked over to the living room, crossed my legs and sat in silence.

What has my life become?

My eyes trace the bookshelves that live in my living room that are filled with romance books. Books have been my escape from reality. I drown myself in them to keep me alive. To allow myself to understand what love could be and how others may experience it.

Those romance books are living a better love life than me. They're a reminder of what I don't have.

The day started with the impromptu meeting with the new agreement and resigning. Astrid and I were busy talking with the lawyer and spokesperson for Dream Records.

Jacob didn't come home until late, even with appointments early in the morning. He smelt odd, not the usual scent he normally wore, and I couldn't pinpoint why he smelt differently— not that it mattered. The devil on my shoulder whispered doubts into my head.
