It was further on into the night and I hadn't left the building yet. I had let go of my fears for a moment and forgotten I was at work. The voices were finally quiet. I was actually living in the moment this time. We both were. Suddenly I felt like he was a friend that I'd know for years. We bonded and laughed over a bottle of whiskey. It felt like the rest of the building was empty, like it was just us. I felt closer to him. We giggled at eachother's tipsy attitudes and funny stories. It probably wasn't healthy, but at least we weren't sad or uncomfortable for a night.
"Y'know Val does this thing where he tries to sound Hispanic?" Vox chuckled
I tilted my head back in disbelief and slapped my thigh.
"Oh my god, I thought you didn't notice!" I exclaimed.
"No it's absolutely terrible!"
"It really is!"
We laughed out loud for a moment. I was nearly in tears. I leaned back into an office chair trying to catch my breath. Vox too tried to take a deep breath from laughing too hard. Finally we both let out a long sigh. The silence grew a bit awkward. All we could hear was the ice in our glasses.
"One more?" Vox asked lifting his glass.
I chuckled through my nose and looked down. He put his hand out and I handed him my glass. He smiled softly and went to fill them.
"I uh...never thanked you for giving me this job sir."
He walked back over and handed me my glass back.
"Ah well, it was nothing." He said sitting back down behind the desk.
I looked down at my glass and let it tilt in my hand.
"It's crazy. I haven't know you very long, but I feel closer than I should sir."
"Well, if you ever want to get closer better start by calling me Vox."
"Sure thing....sir." I said putting my glass to my lips.
Vox rolled his eyes playfully.
"Y'know hiring you was seriously one of the best decisions I've ever made."
"Oh stop."
"It's true, you're.....nice to have around here."
There was a minute of silence.
"I'm sorry I just.... it's hard for me to come to terms with that." I said. "I've been wondering what about me makes me so special."
"You're good at your job."
"I think we both know that's not why you hired me. I don't have much prior experience with this sort of job."
"Just a hunch. It felt right and I trust my gut." Vox said kicking his feet up onto the desk. "And now look at you making thousand dollar sales right beside me."
I grinned a bit flattered.
"I guess so. Maybe you're right. I'm overthinking it." I said.
I got up and walked around the desk.
"It's flattering to hear that from you, Vox."
I said popping up to sit on his desk. He looked at me up and down.
"Well it's nice to know you're sticking around."
"I've made it this far." I said taking a sip.
"Thankyou for all your help." Vox said. You're honestly one of the most amazing souls I've ever meant."
His words were softer. He stared at me longingly. We were right on the cusp of it. But I couldn't commit. His hand slowly slid across the desk. I felt his finger ever so slightly graze my hand. Withought a word we both looked down at our glasses awkwardly. Both of them were empty. I got off the desk and set my glass down.
"I um....I should....probably head home." I said nervously.
Vox's face suddenly flickered from flushed to looking worried. He quickly stood up.
"At this hour? Are you sure?" Vox asked.
"Yeah it's ok, I'll just get a ride from Jack."
Vox looked down at his watch.
"Jack went home hours ago."
"I-I can catch a cab."
"It's too dangerous this late. We have plenty of rooms here for you, Y/N." He offered.
Stay at the tower? I guess it's nice to hear him caring about me. His voice was desperate and worried all at once. It was a very kind offer and I guess it would be dangerous to be out this late.
"I'd appreciate that very much, but I don't want to bother."
"Nonsense. There's plenty of room in my penthouse." Vox said sweetly.
His penthouse? I didn't even know he had a living space in the tower. This place was a lot bigger than I thought. I guess I haven't seen every single floor either. Then again he was inviting me up into his personal quarters. My boss who I suddenly felt an attraction towards was offering a room in his space for the night. If I hadn't known him as a soul eating overlord of a boss I swear he'd be the perfect guy, but that's just it. He was my boss. Was this even appropriate?
"I didn't know you had a living space here. Are you sure I won't bother you on such short notice?"
"I do but I'm almost never there." Vox explained. "And you're no bother at all. Please. It's safer here."
He gestured for me to follow him and invited me up. His penthouse seemed to be on the top floor and was the only one with access to it. The elevator doors opened and we were immediately inside. No hallway. The entire top floor seemed to be under a glass dome. It was an open floor space similar to Val's where the main living was in the center of the room. There was a lot of tech lying around and on the walls similar to how Vox's workshop looked. A smaller desk in the corner has several security screens on each monitor. I walked in and looked around amazed by all of the things in his penthouse. I looked up to see the dark crimson sky and stars through the glass domed roof. It was beautiful.
"Excuse the mess. I don't keep much company." Vox said a bit nervously.
I still couldn't believe he had invited me inside. It seemed surreal that an overlord as big as him wanted anything to do with me. I looked around absolutely amazed. I walked over to the living space and took a seat on the fancy couch he had. I felt like a celebrity.
"I love your penthouse, Vox. It's beautiful."
I said those words and Vox stared down at me. The edges of his screen grew bright red.
"Y-yes. It's very...... beautiful."
His gaze once again said it all. He was admiring me. I felt the blush hit my face. I was flattered.
"Whoo, heh. I think that last drink went right to my face." I said touching my cheek.
I knew it wasn't the drink, but I had to come up with an excuse.
"Let me show you the guest room. I'm sure you're exhausted." Vox said gesturing to the other end of the penthouse. There was an open hallway with 3 rooms attached. A bathroom, a guest room, and the main bedroom. Vox opened the guestroom door and kindly let me inside. I looked around the room feeling completely spoiled by everything inside. There was a large bed that looked super comfy. A small vanity and a desk with a computer fully set up. I quickly shook my head.
"Oh Vox I can't....I-I don't deserve-"
"Y/N please I insist." Vox said. "Please get some sleep. You deserve it."
"Thankyou."
"Of course." Vox said grinning. "There uh should be some pajamas in those drawers." He gestured before scratching the back of his monitor. "Um I hope you sleep well."
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Vox said slowly closing the door.
I was so giddy. I let my body fall into the bed and giggled like a little school girl. What a sweet guy. Even just this guest space had everything. Looking around the room there was even a little water dispenser on the wall. I took this moment to top off on my hydration. Then went over to the vanity and took my hair out of its clips. Then put on some of the pajamas from the drawer. Are these....silk?! Like real silk?! They were so soft. I knew I was sleeping good tonight. Come to think of it this night was probably the most fun I'd ever had in a while. Ever since I died I haven't made a single friend down here. Never felt like I needed to since everyone was pretty much an asshole. I just wish I had the balls to tell Vox how I felt. I'm just scared he's going to make an excuse for Valentino. And again, who the hell am I?! But....Vox.....seemed to feel the same. Is he also scared of Val? I quickly shook off those thoughts. If I thought too hard about it I was just going to give myself nightmares. I needed the sleep more than I needed to think and it was time. I gathered myself under the comfy sheets and shut my eyes.
